Tilt/Trim solenoid clicks, but motor doesn't run

Hello helpful boat mechanics,

I have just installed a used tilt and trim. Rams and hoses look good, but I'm having a problem with the electrical circuits. This is a 1980 Merc 50 hp. It uses the 3 button controls, IN (down), OUT (up), and UP (I think?). The up is equivalent to trailer. When I press the IN button the trim motor works fine. However, when I press the OUT nothing happens, and when I press the UP (trailer), the solenoid clicks, but the motor does not run. I used the Merc trouble shooting guide for when neither the OUT or trailer circuits work (by pass the limit switch, etc), and the voltages look fine. The motor should be working in this procedure. Any suggestions? Since the pump motor works in one direction,I'm inclined to think the motor is good, but if I was sure I wouldn't be asking for help. Any suggestions anyone????

Thanks,
Barry

NOT Sure ,but Check for relays, there should be 2, most common problem when trim motor only runs oneway, if you swap them it should run the other way(replace both)

Re: Tilt/Trim solenoid clicks, but motor doesn't run

Hi Jomac,

Thanks for the info. I should have mentioned, this is a single solenoid system, not a dual. Didn't see anything on the unit, or in the manual about relays. Either I'm overlooking them, or this unit doesn't use them. Is that possible? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Barry

Try and jump the power from the mot post on the solenoid to the wires that arnet working and see if it works when you do that. If it dose its your solenoid.

PROBLEM FIXED.

Thanks for the help. I left the negative hooked up, diconnected the blue and green (hot for forward and reverse for trim motor) and tapped those two with the positive lead. Both directions worked. Rams move the engine. Replaced the solenoid, reconnected wires, and back in business. I happened to have a second solenoid and hat one had the same problems, so I had to buy a new one.
Thanks again!
