Tilting the 98' 175 Evinride manually...

Looks like my tilt motor rusted through and needs repair. However, with the motor down, I am unable to access anything. My intervention thus far is stripping the manual release, breaking the extract took off in the small hole I drilled, and damaging the threads in the valve body assembly thus rendering it useless. All the while I receive no pressure relief. Out of desperation and the fact the assembly is ruined, I drill a hole in the body of it and sure enough I had a pretty nice release of fluid. However, the motor is no more maneuverable up as it was with the system complete. How in the heck do I raise this thing?- a jack? I'm a pretty strong guy, and I can't move it up more than 2-3 inches which it would already do before I drilled anything. Thanks for any tips

Man that really sucks. You drilled a hole in the wrong cylinder. There are three, two for trim and one for TILT!!! That one for the tilt is the one in the middle that is basically inaccessible to you with the motor down. If you release that center ram then the motor will come up. I am not sure how they attached that center ram to the motor but if you could get the pin/bolt out of the tilt ram then the engine will come up also.

Sounds like you are in the market for a CNC powertrim..............

Next time take it slower man. Spray some PB onto the threads of the release nut, then hit it with the propane torch. Get a large handled flathead screwdriver to get that screw loose.

An impact driver with the correct bit works real good too.

If you have an engine hoist you may have to pull the motor off the boat to get the trim off. The unit comes off from the inside at this point may want to just replace the unit. A used FastTrac goes for pretty reasonable prices. A CMC won't work they only go to 130 HP

Gee, can't you drive out the bottom pin of the PTT? That will allow the motor to tilt up, where you can lock it and replace the trim motor.

Isn't the bottom pin retained by the motor brackets? At any rate, you'd also need to remove the hydraulic line at the bottom of the tilt ram

I haven't looked at the Evinrude, but the PTT on my '98 Johnny 150 can be removed by pulling the "keeper" and pounding out the tilt pin that holds the bottom of the PTT unit. There are no hydraulic hoses visable.

What Keeps this motor from tilting up? I have had no success releasing the pressure and am looking for an alternate solution. Thank you
