Re: Time to start trailer rehab

FF , I was also thinking the bunks are a bit high . I have never used an all bunk trailer so was not quiet sure how to set it up . If I lower the stern it will ride bow up . It has to rest on the front roller unless I add some other type bunks . The keel is pretty much parallel with the trailer now . Ya think it would make a difference if it rode bow high . Here are some more pics . Do you think I should place the center bunks on the next strake out from the keel ?

If you could somehow figure out where the stringers in the hull are, I would try to place them there if you can.

That is a very nice looking boat by the way.

Don't bother submerging those. They aren't waterproof and there is no way of making them waterproof.

Yeh ,it pains me to think they would list it for boat trailers only to be non-submersible . I took it apart and chip board was all coated with some kind of epoxy . I was thinking put some 3m 5200 on all the lenses coat the gaskets and leave a drain hole in the bottom . Kinda like the bell type theory . Otherwise it,s 32 bucks down the drain .. :pout::sad:

Thanks bruceb58 ! Here is how the hull is made . Kind of a V shaped all fiberglass set up .

I,m thinking it should be good pretty much anywhere on the hull. They sure made a stout boat back in the day !

Where is your license plate going?

Under the tail light I guess . Been thinking on adding side post so mounting there would be an option . I definitely will add some sort of side guide rails . I would rather use a bunk skid type other than the tall post . The hamster,s still turning the wheel .. LOL!

Where is the trailer width measured from ? Outside rail to outside rail ? Or at the wheels ? If the trailer is more than 80 inches they say you have to add more lights to the back .

Just admiring your almost completed project. Nice work.

When viewed from the side your bunks do appear high. When viewed in the image above, I don't see how you could go any lower. It is impossible to tell from a picture how far back that first keel roller is. If it is more that a couple of feet I would be tempted to add one closer the front of the boat for those few time you hit the pothole from hell. You don't want that nice bow to hit that steel right where the tongue starts. And those suckers can a do break sometimes.

I buy the beer and you come on over, I will allow you to help me with mine. :)

Thanks colbyt been working on her for over a year now ! From the center of the roller to just where the bow starts to turn up is 20 inches .
I could probably lower the tail end a couple inches maybe and it not look to funky . I will probably try it as it is to see how it works out and then lower it some if needed . I need to get it basically set up so I can take the boat back off and go get it weighed to get tag and registration..
Btw , will work for food or beer or both ! A bit of a drive though ...

The only thing I can suggest is to bulk up those bunk brackets big time with some 4 or even 6 inch channel the height of them is probably as low as your gonna get without the keel hitting the trailer frame and maybe by moving both sets of bunks out and making them longer to spread the weight over a longer distance will help along with increasing the angle of the brackets inward! (sketch it up 1st before fab)

OK I hooked up the lights . Used the set I had so I could tow it to get it weighed . Brake /turn signals work but the tail and side lights don,t .
Tested the factory set up on truck . Could not get any reading on the tail light wire . So I tried to use my son in laws truck . No luck , I would have had to cut the rubber sleeve all up to connect the two ends of the harness . I see that my mechanical / electrical bad karma skills are still the same ..

Re: Time to start trailer rehab

OK I have a question . Hopefully someone can shed some light . I picked these rims up at a junkyard . They came off a Ford Ranger pichup.
20 bucks a rim .

There is a recess on the inside of the luggnut hole . Should there be a washer of some sort to fill this space or do you think it will be fine without ..

Thanks guys !

Out of curiosity, how close are you to the max weight of your axle? Sometimes auto wheels aren't rated to the same load as a trailer wheel because an auto wheel has an offset.

I,m not sure what the axle is rated for . I know there was a much larger boat than mine on the trailer when I bought it . How can I confirm the rating . I am guessing the weight of my boat at around 1500 lbs maybe . Not sure until I weigh it .. I would hate to think I can,t use these rims .

To answer your question about the rims. The recess is there to allow space for the keepers that hold the rotors and drums on the hubs. No spacers or washers needed. Nice job on the boat and trailer. Cindy's boat is still in a snow bank waiting for summer to arrive. Daryll (The other half of Cindy's boat. LOL)

Re: Time to start trailer rehab

Ok I need some input .. I took the boat out for a spin around the neighborhood today . Top speed around 50 mph . When I got back I was checking things out and it seem that both hubs have loosened up and I can wiggle them around a bit maybe 3/16 or so . Do you think it,s just a case of needing to tighten the hub nut a little ? I am 99.999% sure that I installed the bearings correctly .
Thanks guys for any thoughts ..
