Timeing advance

I just picked up an 80's model Fibercraft w/ a 90 hp Evinrude. I haven't run the boat yet but i was told the timeing advance stops too soon. My friend Tony said " At W.O.T. you can push the advance and it runs great" other than that its in good shape. the auto choke (the push key style) works, it cranks good and runs ( with a charged batt) I'm going to run the boat sunday if its not raining so i can see what is going on. however any help is a huge help. thanks -Matt

sound like you need and OEM manual, and link n sinc. that's as far as i can go, with out knowing model and year.

Its a 1990 88 HP. I had been searching for a brakedown of the ser# and found it.
I also found out the engine sat up for a few years, than a set of plugs, wires, batt cables and an impeller was put in. It runs good but dies out on the top end of its rpm range. I'm going to rebuild the carbs and mabe put a set of coils in. Than i will run it and see how it feels. As for the link and sink my manual says it should be done with a speical prop in a test tank. I don't have either so i may end up takeing it somewhere for that but if you can offer any help on that it would most helpful. thanks-Matt

Matt i have a 1988 88spl, same engine. do the carbs before anything else. and don't replace coils, unless they are bad. not firing, and and it sounds like they are good. i think you are in a fuel starvation mode with partially clogged high speed jets. order carb kits, and besure to remove all the fixed jets and clean till shiney, takes special tool to remove jets. i used a screwdriver that i slimmed down with my belt sander. carb tool:

I had a co-worker look at the carbs today and they are clean... but we found the timeing set WAY below spec, we put it at 4* as per the book, also the linkages were all messed up, so he fixed that. tomorrow i will know if this is fixed. if it is i will rebuild the carbs this week.
