1989 Johnson 4hp. Sensor on timer base has correct ohm resistance on wires, but I get no "spark" from same. Timer base is no longer available. Is there a procedure to replace just the sensor?

A timer base sensor simply sends a 1.5v signal to a scr within the powerpack. You won't get a spark out of a sensor. The usual cause of no spark on a model such as that with a powerpack is that the powerpack has failed.

Re: Timer Base

Mr. Joe: Thanx for the reply. OK--I'm learning. How do I check the power pack? Originally, I had checked the power pack by looking for a "spark" and found none. Then I went to the timer base and thought that must be the problem. I even took the outboard to a dealer who checked it and believed it to be the timer base. I have checked the kill switch and all related wires and grounds. I even removed the carb, installed a new coil, installed a new fuel pump ---- still the motor will not "hit a lick". I don't want to give up 'cause for an '89 this motor is in A-1 condition---uh but it sits on my work bench in disassembly.

I appreciate any suggestions.

Frankly, it's a good idea to have a extra powerpack on board and the tools to change it. Testing a powerpack is a confusing procedure and you would need the service manual to do it.
