I just replaced the powerhead on a 1989 force 125 L drive. I have read many many posts on how to set the static timing, but i cant find anything on how you should initially set the timing adjustment screw. its been 4 years since i took the old powerhead out so I have no memory on how it was set, also, should the rod that controls the carbs be disconnected while I am setting the timing ?
I appreciate any help and advice !!

Unless you are very lucky, initial setting will be incorrect. Adjust the screw so the two plastic blocks are about 3/8 inch apart and go from there. No need to disconnect the carb linkage, in fact, it is preferable to leave it connected and synchronize carbs and timing. If your L drive engine is the same as the outboard, then the sticky FAQs at the top of the forum will also apply to synchronizing.

Just hook it up and make sure the plugs are grounded.
I use a wire thingy I made up.See pic.
Carbs should be open so leave the linkage hooked up.
Something about air flow or something???
Really probably wouldn't make much difference.
Then see top posts for static timing.
Usually unless you dismantled it completly it will be someplace close and adjusting shouldn't be too hard.
Have a manual?Get the factory one.J
