timing advance

someone please exsplain the timing advance get up for me .when do i use it only on start up or can i use it when im pluggin along and i need some extra juice ..the motor is a 1987 70 hp johnson with the timing advance on the controls .lever kinda flips up an forward ..any input would be great thanks ..exuse me .first boat im learning

Hello again, Dakotarmx. That's the fast idle lever your referring to. Should not use it during normal use when in gear. Only to start the motor and rev it up slightly in neutral if nessesary to keep it going on cold start up..

In fact you cannot even raise that lever when the engine is in forward or reverse. If you can its broken. It's like the old manual throttle on cars - oh yea -- they disappeared in the early 50's. Only I remember them!
