Motor is a 1993 Johnson 120 hp,,90degree motor. Timing is supposed to be 18btdc,,,well here is my dilemma..When checking it,I am getting a reading really high, and someone said that the motor will give a false reading until it warms up a bit, some kind of a cold start system. So I put the motor in a barrel, warmed it up for a few minutes, pulled the plugs, grounded plugs, unhooked the throttle cable, advanced throttle and timing cam the whole way,,and I get a reading of 24 degtees, which from what I have read would be a true 28 degrees when motor is smoking down the lake.I have run this motor approx 6-8 times with no meltdown,,,it runs good at top end,,runs a little rough idleing. The only thing that I did not do was use the tool to jump the spark 7/16 of a inch.Would this make that much difference,,,or am I missing something here.Any and all help appreciated.

Thats because you are using the wrong timing method. The extry 6 degrees is because it in Quick Start. The only way you will get it out of Quick Start is have the engine running, each time you turn the key off and turn key back on, its resets Quick Start for app 5 seconds.

Clanton, if he disconnects the temp sensor wire, will that disable the quickstart feature when cranking? Just curious..

OK Clanton,,what would be the proper way to do it.I have considered(tried) hanging over the back going down the lake, but that gets a little hairy.

Make sure it's strapped down to the trailer very well and take it down to the launch ramp on a quiet day or evening and back her in until the water pick-ups are covered. Tuck the motor all the way in. Start it up and let it run until it's out of the quickstart mode and warmed up. Take someone with you to throttle it up gradually until you hit WOT and you set the timing as quickly as you can. You're done....

Is this in any way hard on the transom/trailer etc.I suppose this is where a test prop would come in handy.Just a idea, but what would happen if you warmed the motor up,,,then unhooked the fuel line which would stall the motor eventually, then check timing.Doing this ,you would not have to turn the key switch off which would not reset the quickstart.

You can ground the wire from the temp sensor, black and white, I think, but each time you engage the starter it resets for 5 seconds. I just hang on the transom, while someone I trust runs the boat. Just as the tach reaches 5000 rpms at full throttle check the mark, then reduce the rpms, you may have to do this 2/3 times. You can turn the timing screw one turn at a time, then recheck. You must be close or it would have melted a piston.

I like Rick's method, and please, if you have a manual transmission.....set the park-brake.<br />I have also seen a vorticy(sp) created from a non moving boat at high throttle settings and causes the prop to cavitate and over-rev, so be careful and be prepared to pull the throttle back quick-have some help near-by.

Hey Clanton,,,can you not just run the boat at wot and check timing,,or is it that important to catch the timing at 5000 rpm's.
