Augidawg! Thats why you turn the flywheel about an Inch past center, or the piston on the down stroke. You don't have to remove the stop tool. We'll have this guy so confused , he will never get it set. Put a pencil in no. 1 spark plug hole, turn flywheel until pencil won't come out any further, close enough. Jeez.
I am with R. Johnson on this one. Dont worry about 1 degree. Thats how I did mine, no problems.

Hey Tim, you've got some good advice from the experts here. If you can find an excuse to pull the the head(s) it may be a good learning experience. You could check for excessive carbon, inspect the cylinder walls, replace the deflectors, and mark TDC for each cylinder (for ignition troubleshooting). This may be overkill, but I feel I learned a bunch by seeing it for myself.
