Re: Timing Problem? ( with video)

Gotcha. Ya, I don't even know all the lingo or correct name for some of the parts yet. I was mixing up what I thought was the "support" ring/plate (the silver colored one beneath the cam and brass plate) with the actual brass support plate. That didn't even make sense saying it. LOL Anyway, yes, I will work on that next as well re-aligning the coils as he has asked/suggested. I may screw that up because they "look" perfect to me but hey, if that's what he says to do then I'll do it. Maybe I should post a pic of their alignment 1st so he (or anyone who knows) can say whether they are okay as is and not to touch them? I think I'm also going to tear the carb apart and make sure there's no blockage in there and take a look at the reed thingie while I have that off just to make sure none are bent or have garbage stuck in them. I'll report back. Thanks

Am I supposed to punch the support plate without it being screwed down?

i always keep it attached to the block.....be gentle tho. you may have to reassemble it once or twice to get it right. any sign of the flywheel rubbing on either coil??

I'm not really sure what to say or think about the coils or anything else right now. I tried to take some pics of the coils and how they're mounted but not sure you can see what you need to see because every time I try to upload pics iI get an error message that says they are to big. I have searched everywhere on here to find out the exact allowed file size but it doesn't say. It just says that the file type(s) and size will be displayed in the management window when you upload a pic. Well, it doesn't. It just shows what file types are allowed. Anyway....see if any of these pics answers your question. I have nothing to compare it with so I don't know. My gut tells me after seeing the little areas that are sticking out farther (at the bottom of the coils mount) is not normal or good. Mind you, I have replaced the flywheel that was on this motor when I got it as it was obviously beaten on with a hammer to get it off. The one I have on there now is pristine and nothing rubs. On another note....when inspecting the carb once again I removed the welch plug with a punch as suggested and after putting a small hole in it when removing found out the replacement one that came with the carb rebuild kit is not the same size. It's to small. Also, one of the needles will not seat in far enough to grab the very bottom threads down inside and I can't figure out why. So now it won't re-seat/install properly. I'm pretty much ready to give up on this motor. I'm kind of at my limit at this point with it all. :blue:

Don't give up! The coil mounting screw holes are slightly sloppy. The very bottom edge of the coil should align with the mounting boss perfectly. If you shove the coil inward, there maybe a slight ledge - bring it back to the ledge. Pics are less than perfect but look good. I think it's leaning toward carb if you got the points set right. You've went to great lengths to point out you problems - don't give up!

the coil heels are to be flush with the top of the boss, needn't worry about the base...the welch plug installs with the dome side up and is then"fitted" by strikeing it in its center so that it is expanded and seals around its circumfrence, I've used a nut driver handle or 1/4" extension to do this,,,not certain what you mean concerning the needle seating...any chance there's some old packing still in place preventing the needle from screwing in further?

BTW....I haven't even attempted to bang on my support plate with a chisel yet as it makes no sense to me. When you guys say you may have to do it a few times until you get it just right etc., it makes no sense to me. Get it right or aligned with what? there are 4 screws that hold it (presumably) in place, where it's supposed to be. Look at my pic. Does it look off or loose? What would punching it in 4 places do? I'm sorry, but I just don't understand and don't want to ruin it it even more until I know what I'm supposed to be doing here. Sorry, I know I sound pretty short right now but I'm just at my wits end. Time to stop for a while I think. :blue:

Pic are to be in JPG format. Preferred pixel width of 400.

Copying from my previous reply post #3..........

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creates friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

The coils are proper as is the aluminum armature plate machine work.

The trouble you had starting that engine... the carburetor needs reworking... dirty, not adjusted properly, whatever.
