Timing

I am new to boats, but got a 77 Harris deck craft and says ford on title so i figured it is a ford 302 but on motor says OMC 175 on valve covers. One thing i would like to know is can someone tell me how to set the timing on it I think it may be off and also the motor wont rev up, any thoughts on that, please help thanks.

I have that same engine and HP.

I highly reccomend doing a full tune up first before worrying about setting the timing. A full tune woke my engine up drastically.

timing is 10 BTDC.

So plugs, wires, maybe cap and rotor and what else?

yes , all of that plus new points.

I bought a sierra kit last year that everything including the cap. the wires and coil I had already replaced.

Edit - Sierra Part 18-5277 was the kit for my 77 with a 175hp 302.

Thanks everyone, Im ready to learn about timing, does anyone know correct fire order? Also for 10btdc how will i know when I am 10 degrees before top dead center? Thanks again

Your engine should have the firing order printed on one of the valve covers. On mine it is printed on the port sides.

have you changed the contact points yet ? because when you change the points, it will change your timing so there is no point in setting the timing until you have a new set of points in there.

You will be needing a timing light and a dwell meter to do the job correctly.

I found the firing order thanks. I will change points before doing timing I just wanted to get on right path.. All I need now is a gasket set.. anyone have one laying around by chance?

Dont forget to check the advance weights in the dist. Rusty, Sticky, broken springs!

I will check that too thanks. Now only question I have left is how do I go about changing the oil on this inboard omc 175hp? Also what type and how much oil do I need?
