Timming chain cover seal

I have a 1997 5.7 L 350 cu. Bravo II LX .
The crankshaft seal on the timing chain cover is leaking a slight bit . Does this cover need to be removed to change this seal ? I was hoping this seal goes in from the outside of the cover. Am I lucky ?

If you have an engine serial number we can look up the engine directly and give you a definitive answer. A lot changed in the 1995 to 1997 era with the GM based engines, and one of the things that changed was the timing cover (went from a pressed tin to composite material)....

My bad achris , didn't think serial number needed for this one. It's a 1997 350ci. # OK147937.Not at the boat right now but, I'm pretty sure it is metal.

If the front seal is shot, you will need to pull off the harmonic balancer to get to the crank/camshaft cover. Unfortunately, I believe your engine oil pan needs to drop down to access that cover.
Hopefully, you have enough clearance to access without removing or lifting your engine.

That's a composite cover (and they are rubbish)... Yes, the seal can be pulled and replaced without removing the cover (which is good because the cover is a one time affair :facepalm... As for the seal number, not listed in any of the Merc parts listing. I would pull the seal and take it to a seal shop and have them match it... Way cheaper too

The composite timing cover front seal GM part number looks to be AC-Delco part number 296-15 or (GM) OEM # 10128316.

Yep, that's the way I bought my new timing cover and oil pan (direct from GM).... Even with freight, it was a third of what Merc Aust were asking.... :facepalm:

When i went to change the seal in mine the cover had a hairline crack in it. might of got away with a bead of silicone but didnt want to chance it. the good thing is the plastic covers you can change the cover without loosing the oil pan. (IMPORTANT!!!!!) when you get your new cover it comes with new shoulder bolts already in the cover, the problem was one of them hit the back of the water pump. i had to grind the head down a little to fit in. i wont even tell you the story there.
