I had to strip her clean, the PO had put down a coat of latex house paint over the factory job, in some places it was 3 different colors.

After mulling it over for a few days I'm going to go ahead and do what I know worked for me the last time and take wog's learned advice. I will just shoot the rusto se primer with bombs, lay down a coat of rusto primer over the se and then blast on some topside with a touch of hardener.

Now onto the tough part, deciding on the color scheme inside and out. Any thoughts, ideas and links to other paint jobs will be appreciated.

I am partial to grey and black myself.

I had considered a black and red but red tends to fade to brown over time.

Then I considered white and royal blue as well.

I actually think my next is going to be white and blue.

That is a tried and true proven method, its worked for several of us on here man don't sweat it.

The cool thing is with the Chief is that I have the option of what color to paint the cabin inside and out too. Originally the cabin was coated with a black vinyl looking material but I'm not going there with it, too 70's landau top looking for my taste. I do like the classic white and navy blue of the SC fleet along with a custom painted swoosh. Then there's the option of what color to paint the bow cover and gunnels.

I LOVE Michael P's black & white:

DSCF3191.jpg

Shame to have stripped all that down to bare aluminum & not leave at least SOME of it BARE

Or same as Michael's, just using a fairly dark navy instead of the black, AND everything below the spray rail BARE w/ either the blk/wht or the blu/wht combo............

i believe i am going much like micheals black and white on my 18 ft ss. also h20 after much research on these forums my plan is as woodens on paint. self etch the bare spots with either rusto se rattle cans or roll on sem se lightly , 2 coats primer of oil based rusto, followed by maybe 3 coats rusto oil based top coat. and contemplating putting a hardener in the last coat. planning on spraying primer and top coats with hvlp sprayer with some sanding between coats. good luck man

Yeah I gave Michael's Chief the hairy eyeball right after getting the chief, great thread too. I'm considering leaving the bottom bare but the only problem with that is the bow has a 4" crease dent from an impact that needs repaired and then it would have to get painted over to look right.

CC I don't see the need to lay down quite as many coats of primer and paint, just more room for error with me being an amateur. Like some others here, you too may stop at the 2nd because she looks so good and you don't want to risk having something go wrong trying to make it better.

I stopped at the second, I couldn't bring myself to try a third after she looked sooo good. Michael P has got the ticket that is a really sharp looking boat.

I didn't see the dent you're talking about:

There is basically no chemical difference between the Rustoleum Topside Paint and the PRO Oil Based Paint. When you ad the Hardener to the PRO paint you'll get a durable, High Gloss finish that will be nice finish for your boat. IMHO no need to pay the extra cost for the Topside. The PRO is a lot easier to find too!!!

No these dents were from previous use, the one on the bow I was talking about is just above the spray rail so actually I would just have to fill it and paint down to the rail. I went out and took a back lighted pic of the crease dent so it shows really well.

I have a couple on the bottom dents that I was not going to do anything with, the big one is right under a rib too.

Dang that last pic makes that boat look like a monster.

MY $0.02, free of charge mind you :watermelon:

If you want bare, go bare, dents be darn. If you think it'll drive ya nuts to leave the dents, fill 'em & paint.

$0.02 Part2, still free of charge :watermelon:

It's not going to be a show boat trailer queen, correct? Is it ever going to be beached? EVER? Have you ever nicked a keel or the hull getting a boat on/off the trailer?

None of those ^^^ mean it can't be nice. Damn nice in fact, based on the SN results.

Dents are tin boat scars. Wear 'em proud, helps tell the story of it's history prior to your ownership, perhaps mine.

Your hull's 'scars' don't look like a complete fubar ugly mess, I could live w/ them.........

I do understand the desire for them to be missing on a completely rehab'd boat though.........

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

The hull on my Holiday is pretty beat up, she was used hard for 37 years, I am finding that a mirror polish hides the dents and dings way better than paint. Probably cuz it hurts your eyes to look at it in the sun. The biggest plus in my opinion with going polished on the bottom is there will never be a problem with paint scratches from beaching that show way worse than any thing else.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

I told myself after the SN rebuild that the next one I would not have any dents that will draw my eye as soon as I look at the boat. I'm sure it's just me and that nobody else cares or sees them and of course you can't see the dents while using the boat. I really don't like the idea of spending money or more time for the bottom and had planned on leaving it bare just for the reasons guys are saying.

It sure looks awesome to have a nice gleaming tin can, sounds tempting but for 1 season, maybe 2? Then you have a gray tin can unless you continue to polish every year it will oxidize. I like the idea of washing my painted tin when dirty and waxing once a year.

JB nailed the kind of guy I happen to be, and the Chief won't be a show boat trailer queen, just built to last and look good while doing it.

Thanks for the input, I really do appreciate it.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Alright I was at the farm and ranch store today to get a new tank heater for my Koi pond and decided to check out their paint isle.

I found an entire wall of paint for the farm and tractors in particular. A nice selection of "Our Finest Alkyd Formula" and the "Hardener Available for Added Durability." The very same thing minus the name "Topside" and "marine". $26 a gallon and they have the same Alkyd formula in all the same color rattle bombs! I was doing a little happy dance when one of the pests that work there interrupted me and spoiled the moment.

I suspect that's similar or re-branded Majic paint that Tractor Supply sells & is listed in WOG's $100 paint job link:
"Paint Your Boat for Under $100 Bucks...Well Almost"

It's the same as Rusto. And matching rattle cans is why Jas is so fond of Rusto enamels. Well that & $ :D.

The hardener seems to be a great addition, esp for hulls & such...

Water - Stop asking questions in the store! :D

I think WOG did some research on the Majic, not sure. Searched the forums and sure 'nuf - http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...ive-but-quality-paint-alternative-560815.html

WOG also said that Majic is very similar to the Valspar that TSC used to carry in another thread.

Have you checked out.........................Oh too much, never mind. :)

You have her stripped nicely. Color schemes still seem to be the hardest choice. I've looked over many photos but still haven't decided which direction to go. The dent on your first pic doesn't look too bad. I had a couple docking dents on my Chief that always caught my eye while I was sanding the hull. I finally took a couple blocks of wood, had the wife on the outside of the hull holding one block of wood tight to the hull and myself inside with another block of wood and hammer and was able to tap them back out to near normal. Now I have to look closely to see where there were. Good luck, she is looking good.
Happy holidays!

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Uh yeah a local brewery sells me their beer by the can. The frosty mugs are above next to the J?germeister.

Real nice Chrysler OB you have there

Also looks like this boat will turn out great, really going the extra mile it looks like :)

Paint supply shops around here have this aluma prep stuff, a nice metal cleaner that does a better job than vinegar did.

The metal goes from that grey to a very clean almost white, and slightly etches the surface.

They also sell a zinc chromate wash, it pretty much turns the metal into a slightly gold color, from there they say any paint and primer will work.

The aluminum wash was about $25-$30 for a gallon, and you dilute it further with water at 3 to 1 (3 parts water).

I also found the wash removed some left over paint I gave up on removing...

The paint shop also sold me what would mix into a gallon of paint, some industrial stuff.. I pretty much wanted something that would not come off from fuel/oil sitting on the paint in the splashwell or what drips out of the drains and down the back (my Jet's paint is pealing from it).

If recall with a quart of the cleaner, hardener, recommended thinner, and the paint cost me about $120

I also spent a good $35 - $45 on a quart of epoxy zinc primer while I was at it, and skipped the zinc wash (the zinc wash was a good $40 or $50 :faint2: )
