Viva Aluma-agra! :victorious:

I got all the pieces and parts to make me a home made break too. No need to spend on something I can whip up out of stuff I got right here, the only thing I may go buy are some heavy duty hinges.

Got some goodies on the brown truck coming next week too! :D

Hey WM, I just started to make a sheet metal brake yesterday. I got inspired by BlueFinn with all of his retrofitting on his SC and realized quickly I NEED A BRAKE. I'll post some pics of what I come up with tonight. What do you have in mind. I am thinking 30" wide. That will be wide enough to bend my consoles. ED

My brake will be around 28" and that's because of the material I have on hand.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Here's a bit of an update for the mob with some pics... :joyous:

Got a bunch of work done this weekend. Rigged up my homemade brake and got the hull stiffeners all bent up and like BF they are all custom made and numbered for where they go.

y4mppiT-tzFqkH7utAs148sCvLzMjS-XX0NXbGPSBIIcoDrcT-K0GovheeApGl6xHHKoLmOsWhOwgshnSeS0fLEF1Y7FokO2Oe58ayOy1LLR7CBQSJ7DjKG5rPyD7v2AoY8YpksWr2oYejl6GoZ5EBSEyESpj4-GtRm28DCG0MPL7R9gzGOVt1nWOfznSpKH4Bgqqxn8qHHfiPMTxv3Y5_sGA

Transom is all cut out and primed up for painting.

Some fun stuff, at least I think of it as that when I get to sand out and spar some beautiful mahogany, this is the bow arch. Sorry about the blur, don't know what happened?

y4mGnnh0PIfTzBXC491HQVLGgFZZ4IR2WG0tKEpmajIXs6PHZYPfRRFEZfJE9siCxAASxKnT9QPex2apoUMDTjS13IOrBbSgOjEUubd0IhFvytfQsIqsS16XDjyM7sL5HU0RTmXVf8QgKBrdGY2cH_4h9dVA3SdRej-11iQ6wDPQ_MhZs9clThkk9V2aJCBE5hMhJVBRYuJRvXaCrio9yPEfQ

Clean up continues with the inner hull as the weather permits work outside. I should mention my resto buddy came over and tore into the hull while I was bending the hull stiffeners... He went though 2 wire wheels this weekend, thanks buddy!

y4m-bl2Z13IIq7j3hOny_14-PZVJowA2Ku1bzxitR9zkkm87JbLviDlLTzc9OC0afAJvrExWi5YV33txmlqD1JxRRYaffLVImboc6ygkRbffPJrMvXmHpIeATZVPgpZXg2WjKx4gZEXmkQZxxVeKIk-SSfACHXjFnHOS7DT6SL0RBjWknBuTfWAXAZHlNIPCqDabxLYzM_EQKSdjdM41JxxDw

To finish off the update I have to say that Star-Craftsmanship was lacking in 1970 and below is my proof, the rusted out things you'r seeing in the pic is from the blind rivet steel mandrels that fell in behind this cabin floor support. I had to drill out the rivets and remove the support in order to do the job right and get the mess cleaned up. 4 decade left nothing but rust powder of the mandrels.

y4mtdptkU8G8wndSt5suk7yB4PPDoXho4_Us9WwTNaqYKwrqnK5aSbLXBOB3qmqxU9FKhHLcW_0-Rhh2oUjtgYZnO1l321adRS6ErP8k-tMtVApmI5HBZ7E6O5Kqpf-Wns_YOcrzywYBTKDTtaZCRQRRt_Eg0H1bJbF9jVNGosFn_R0KZHpcdocc4mG5feqav66paTCwl3GxWknTrj8kDaCiQ

The gunnels were cleaned up as well after removing them last weekend. Tons of holes everywhere in them, I wonder if an IQ test would be too much to ask of boat owners before they buy a drill?

Now that's a post when you hit the max image limit!

You got lots done this weekend, WM. It's bad enough when we have to contend with POs using steel hardware, but SC - :tsk::nono:

NICE work looking great.

Its easy to do after looking at Bluefin's rebuild, I decided I needed a metal brake and hull stiffeners then remembered mine came factory equipped from Starcraft with them.

And Since I am on the downhill side of things a metal brake would gather and collect dust.

BUT I still want one.

Great looking backers ^^^ Great having a buddy willing to ride the grinder thru 2wheels. Angling for a fishing trip perhaps? Even better to have someone in for the grungy work, not just asking for a ride when you're done.

Sig: Would you settle for a nice pair of cleco pliers & some clecos?

I fiddled with them for about an hour at the office the other day after they came in the mail. Spent some time looking for something w/ a 3/16" hole already to stuff one thru.....

Said it before:
So obvious, can't believe no one mentioned it before now
Esp given the huge increase in pulling them completely apart.

In fact, I've coined a new adverb:
Are you going to be BlueFin'ing it?

Looking real good WM, I too have run into lots of steel mandrels, that have rusted away. Star-craftsmanship you say, when I had the Holiday flipped I noticed the rivet lines on the bottom were all over the place, like maybe too many wobbly pops.

Great progress Agua!! Those spray-rail braces look great esp on a homemade brake!

I'm sure you gave your buddy a pat-on-the-back for that wire-wheel work...I bet there was a white-cloud over his head for most of that mess. definitely worth a few frosty Alpine lagers!

look-out! jb is creating adverbs :D Thank Astor for introducing the mob to cleco's...they ARE the mutt's nuts!

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Hey Wm great work this week, I am finding similar craftsmanship issues in my tin boat. I discovered pop riveted wire hangers that are factory all having steel mandrels. I am removing all as I clean. I am ready to clean the inside also, does your buddy travel?

Great work I like what I see and am learning. Ed

Great progress brutha!

It's easy to bait one when you have a fridge in your garage. :very_drunk:

A common problem that I need suggestions.

Started plugging holes in the gunnels last night, starboard had 72 holes but the port only had 51. I've got to find something to skin them with, no way to make them look decent due to the idiot with a drill damage.

I know many have fought the same beast and slain it, so any suggestions on what to use for cover up the gunnels would be appreciated. I have some ideas but nothing set in stone.

I can do my best at covering up the holes and dents then shoot paint.
or
Find some sort of material to hide the mauled mess.

On both the vertical & horizontal parts of the gunwale:

I'd vote for fill & skim, and then shoot them w/ paint. MarTex vs JB?. Anybody ever try:

It's got aluminum IN the filler. $30/qt +/-.

The plugged holes are with the JB stick epoxy, it works great to make like a rivet in the holes that has a bucktail on the opposite side. The pics here, show what I'm faced with. I've never tried using the all-metal.

I missed that you had started filling the holes & wanted to skin them after.

I thought you meant fill OR skin them.Shoot them w/ SE, give them 2 coats of a high build primer & then long board them, possibly repeating both the high build primer & sanding, as necessary to make them smooth?

Use a hammered finish to paint them:

I really feel lucky. If and when I paint, I bet I only have about 20 small holes to fill. Most are from replacing the windshield with a three piece and moving it after I thought I had it where I wanted it. I feel sorry you you guys with the swiss cheese tinnies. :blue:

Those are 'deliberate' windshield weep holes, for drainage
