thats great, thanks, i do have the splash well in the garage and will put it back on after, and will have to get a few of those drain tubes, nice eye (without any pics haha) i was going to put some up today after i gluvit'd the entire boat (took 3/4 of the can) hope i didn't use too much, but that seemed about right.......but it rained and i had to rig up a cobbled mess of a boat cover with my 14' tin cover (6" too short for frigs sakes : (
maybe next week.
anyways, ive been searching for a motor, found a boat on craigslist, the owners arn't too sure what the motor is, they say its a 14' 1984 Thunderhawk w/ 33 HP Johnson, its a lil ski boat, but when i asked what the motor year is they said they thought 84, but obviously they haven't made a 33 since the 70's....anyways, i think i could get a good deal, they said it ran 2 years ago when they last used it....what do you think? heres the add

I'd say that motor is 60's or earlier. IMHO I'd pass on that and look for something newer.

Thanks TDF...i totally agree, i want something at least 80's, not a big fan of the points and other BS that goes with that old technology...thanks for the good eye (im new to outboard engines so wouldn't know a new engine from an old...well with a few acceptions)
the hunt continues !!
anyone have a good website with cheap boat covers? my tarp has held up awesome from the last 2 years with a poly tarp i got online but cant remember the site, was 100 bucks, and totally waterproof and tear proof...but its a lil too small for the new toy.

I'm actually a fan of the simpler points set up I'm just fearful of the finding parts for older motors.

For the boat cover many have had good luck with the ones at Walmart. Found mine from the same makers at Menards if you're in the midwest.

+1. I love the old magneto set up too. Much easier and cheaper to fix/maintain than electronic ignitions. I used to have a '66 33 hp too, and it was super reliable and strong as an ox, a bit of a gas hog though. To each his own. Either way, I think the hp is about right. A 30-35 hp motor would push the boat along nicely. You could even go as low as a 20 hp, if you keep it light and more of a fishing boat set up.

ya i was thinking 30ish HP should be lots for what i need...just hard to find one with controls/not on a boat that i have to pull apart....i did find a 20HP merc from the 70's thats been stored since 81 when the owner passed away, they had the carb cleaned, and it started ok, but its a tiller so would have to find the controls to convert it over, and they want like 400 for just the motor (trying to sell the whole boat obviously) but i think ill be patient (very hard for me hahaha) I NEED IT NOW!!! : )
ill check out walmart, are there covers water proof, or canvas? i just loved my poly tarp, no mess, no dew, no bugs.....ive had canvas on our ol 25' searay, and i had to towel the deck off everytime we used it, plus the dirt, plus the bugs....guess im just lazy hahaha

checked out walmarts website...which one does everyone like? they have a pretty broad range, like 50 - $300....

Walmart boat cover The name brand doesn't sound the same but I'm fairly sure that's the one I have. It has held up well over the last two years however. It does have some staining from standing water since I haven't been right on keeping it drained as its only been covering the cap to my Aerocraft for the last year. I've also never used it as a trailering cover so I can't speak to it abilities/durability in that department.

ok sweet, thats pretty cheap...is it totally waterproof? like if it pours will it seep water thru, or no? my boat doesn't sit in the water, it sits on a beach trailer that i push into the water, so standing water isn't a problem, and i never trailer it so not worried about that either....thanks TDF

No its not totally water proof. Its proof enough that pitched right it sheds water. If you have standing water and it sags it will sit there and drip until you drain it off.

All that said the year I had it on the boat (while it was together) it was tight and pitched right and kept it completely dry inside.

ok cool, i always bolt 1/2" copper tube on each side of the boat and use 2 lengths of pvc pipe to slope the tarp and keep it tight because its super windy on the beach.

got the ol girl painted inside today, the gluvit is still a lil tacky where it was thicker but i wasn't painting much of it since the floor covers it, she looks pretty good...tomorrow i'll fire in the floor and dash and finish sealing the transom.....coming together, should be ready for the drink by the weekend!! wish i was putting on a real motor, but gotta find one first, so my lil 2hp will have to do for now (gonna be a slow drive from the ramp home, but better then paddling hahaha)

I don't think that vintage motor, especially if missing controls, is worth that kinda money.

Copper and Alum don't mix well over time the Alum will corrode when the copper touches it.

Looks like a nice project. I also like older motors, a 35hp Evinrude Lark would be awesome on that.

+1 but I'm biased since me and Mercs don't get along.

Also take note that while the Evi comes with cables it doesn't appear to come with the actual control box. I don't know if there is anything special about the factory box or if a generic one will work. I'd look into that to figure out what it does to the overall cost. Could be some possible negotiation stock.
