:D Calm down..your making it harder than it needs to be..I take it this is a single poly type of paint? And when you intially roll out the paint are there quite a few small bubbles in the paint?...Three do you have a home depot around your location???

Doesn't it jusr make you want to pour some gas on your boat and light a match? I painted 1/2 my boat and it had mini-sags everywhere, then I moved to HVLP gun and it orange peeled it all. I can't tell nowadays whether I love my boat or hate it with a searing passion. It varies day to day.

My advice, which won't sound very helpful, but will keep your boat from becoming a giant fireball: Go buy a pane of glass and try various methods on it, so you can just scrape the paint off on each attempt. I still haven't successfully painted that pane of glass I have, but at least my boat isn't getting sanded every time I try.

We may be missing an obvious point here. Does rustoleum recommend tipping their paint? I know Interlux and other polyurethane paints recommend it, is rustoleum a poly paint? The method applies to some paints because of the agents in the paint that make it flow as it cures. I would read the label carefully. It may need to be sprayed to get the best result. Just because a paint can be applied using a roller does not mean it should be.

I always thought rustoleum was an enamel. I rolled rustoleum marine on my truck topper and it came out okay with the white closed cell rollers, and all I did was roll it on, no tipping. There is orange peel, but it's not horrible. It could be wet sanded and polished if I felt the need. I used the same paint and blew it on with a wagner painter. That didn't go so good, I think I used the wrong tip or I didn't reduce it enough...it splattered on and made a good deal of runs in the paint. I let it cure and sanded the bad areas and then rolled a layer of paint on it...it's on my truck and I'm not complaining about it, though I'd never sell that paint job to anyone

This is plain Rustolium or Marine Rustolium? I ask because when I did roll and tip, I was using Interlux Brightside one part paint. It levels really quick and looks great because they put lots of lever in the paint. If you are using regular Rustolium, it doesn't have as much leveler as the marine paints that are intended to be roll and tipped.

Try thinning the Rustolium about 5% with a reducer that is also a leveler. Check with a good paint store, probably not at Lowes, Depot, etc.

It's the marine formula. I heated it up and used TONS of thinner, far more than the 5% they suggest. Closer to 25%. And now it is laying down much nicer. I think I will just go with this.

Ericpn, I didn't mention that I stripped all the old/loose/spray paint of my hull. Then I put down two coats of Rustoleum Marine Primer followed with the Rustolium marine paint. I used 4" foam rollers and tipped with a fine brush. Hope that helps.

The directions say between 50 and 80 degrees.. it's about 55 right now in my garage. Should I try again when warmer? Or possibly thin out the paint a bit?

Self leveling paint has to do with the ambient temp and how "hot" the paint is when applied. "Hot" thinner is capable of helping with your problem but then again... rustoleum is enamel paint.

Depending on what you are applying that to, I'd be more tempted to use Petit EazyPoxy paint. I did my 24 Searay with it. Roll it on and come back using a foam brush to feather/smooth that. Glass job when done and the touch ups when you hit the dock too hard is simple too.
