tired of starting motor 25 times

I have a 2000 175hp Johnson. The problem i am having is very intermitting in all conditions. When I start the motor it either dies immediately or as soon as I try to put it in gear. Sometimes I start the motor 20-30 times before I can get it to run. Once it is running, it runs great with no problems. When it dies it sounds like it coughs and then stops hard. Boat shops tell me the only thing they can think of is that the gas is draining out of the carbs. Does this sound like a fuel problem or is something much worse? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Are you using the neutral throttle and are the primers working? How long has it been since you have rebuilt the carbs?

carbs have not been rebuilt, they tell me this motor has 6 carbs, has brand new bulb

When you start it and put it in gear, hit the key switch "choke" and see if it stays running. You may have an issue with the vapor pump....it's a little pump at the top of the fuel rack. You might also check all fuel connections and make sure none are lose enough to suck air. Look at the carbs while having some pressure on the primer bulb. The float bowls are "plastic" and can warp. This can be noted from any bowls leaking around the float bowl gasket.

Sounds like a similar problem to the one I have with my 2001 Johnson 150 (see my recent post: 150 Johnson dies from a warm start). It seems a number of people with this motor have similar problems.<br /><br />Have you tried revving it up in neutral? When I do this the motor "clears" and then all is well. It runs great from then on.<br /><br />Does your motor do this when it starts from cold? Mine seems to only do this when it has been run and then sits for a while. Do you pump the primer bulb before starting?<br /><br />One suggestion I had was that the low speed mixture jets are set too lean. When I get a chance I am going to try richening mine out a bit and see if that makes a difference.
