So how long can I keep my trailer parked without causing damage to the bias ply tires? Also, how far do I need to drive the trailer & how often to avoid the tires from being ruined? Thanks.

Re: Tires & storage

For extended storage, get a couple of jack stands and take the load off. Bias plys are notorious for developing flat spots from extended sitting of over two months. I won't run a trailer tire more than 6 years myself because of age cracking and non use that is again more of a problem with bias ply tires than radials. Tires live longest when well exercised.

Thanks. I take the boat out every couple of weeks and our tent trailer about every 2 months. I think I'll put the tent trailer on jack stands to keep the tires safe and happy.

Covers are a great idea for sun protection! I get a lot of sun at my place, I'll have to start doing that!

I've always heard to place plywood under the tires (if too lazy to jack it up) to keep them from "drying out --or rotting due to moisture seaping up from the ground).. I don't know how true that is, BUT I have gotten a pick up that sat on a concrete drive for 4 years (tires showed NO visiable signs of drycracking), within 2 months of driving it all 4 tires had seperated.

I do 1 or the other for winter storage.

I don't understand the sunlight issue--how is the sunlight on a trailer tire (if it has fenders) any different on a car? If you park your car in the same place every day at work, isn't that the same as a trailer tire just sitting there?

However, I know that the spare can take a beating if it is stored flat without a cover.

I've got 3 trailers at my house that my sit for 6 months or so without moving. Never had an issue with flat spots ruining the tires...Ever see a camper or boat at a dealership's lot sitting up on jackstands? I doubt it.

You don't see it or feel it sitting up there all comfy in your tow vehicle... but in reality your trailer is back there bumping up and down like a bunny on crack with bias plys that have sat for the first 50 miles or so which can form a wear pattern in your tires. Best to give them a rest when not in use (jackstands)

Re: Tires & storage

That was a good link to the tire rot info. Our tent trailer might be sitting for up to a couple of months without use, so I'll put it on stands. We've already been sidelined on the 5 freeway with a blowout and I don't want a repeat. Thanks for the info guys.
