I've done a compression test and it's 120 on both cylinders. I have an inline spark tester. The window shows it has spark. How do you do an open air spark test? Just hold the spark plugs to an engine bolt?

Alls fine with no load on gearcase, it will likely reopen especially in a hard reverse when carrier is loaded...

use and adjustable open air spark gap tester..
Available at most local auto parts stores...
Set it so gap is 7/16". Plug wire on one end, other end clips to engine block for ground..

Thanks for the info on the gearcase.

I had a carb rebuilt kit and did that this afternoon. She's running on both cylinders. Took her out to the lake and she's running good. Still dies if it idles for a while but starts right up after it dies.

Might try opening the slow speed needle valve slightly, or adjusting the throttle setting for slightly higher idle.

Is there any way you can strengthen the housing mend with a rivet or screw, or two? The front mend just above the gearcase looks like it might hold some promise. (Like the screw and glue method for some hull repairs.)

I'm not sure if there is room for a screw. The prob bearing housing fits under that cracked part and needs to be smooth. I've got it put together now. Hopefully it will hold.
