to change the water impeller or not

I know this is more of a motor question, but it seems like for some questions you get no practical responses, just change the impeller every year, or every 2 or 3 years. I know you starcraft guys are more practical.

How long do you guys let your water pump impellers run for years/estimated hours. I realize how you treat them matters. I always make sure mine are run in water or on the muffs with lots of water so they never run dry and never run in muddy water or sandy water.

I changed my dads 1995 outboard impeller last year (original never been changed), very low hours but the impeller looked fine, no cracks or such and it was working great. After I changed it I thought what a waste of money and time.

I am going back and forth on if I should change my 2001 impeller on my 15hp johnson, bought it new so I know it has never been run dry and it pees fine. should I or should I not change it? From a real world experience point of view.

I would change it out, 11 years is a good run on a impeller. Just for the piece of mind I would spend the time and be done with it. It won't take that much time to swap it out, and its cheaper that a power head.

I vote 2-3 years

on my mercs its a pretty easy job, so I atleast like to look at them.

on my FIL's evenrude V4 its a pain in the butt!

3-4 years on that pig..
