1. A suggestion that you don't like or disagree with is not necessarily wrong and doesn't necessarily come from someone who doesn't know what (s)he is talking about
The point that I was bringing up is that there are people on the forum that give poor or unsafe advice regularly.

This happens a LOT. At least for me, I just can't let it go when someone says to split a Volvo drive in half to change the impellor when there isn't one in there.

For me, when I post on a forum(not necessarily this one) I expect to get bad advice along with the good and would really come to expect people to chime in when improper advice was posted.

the way i personally deal with misinformation, is by PM to the culpret. explain the errors of their thinking, or for them to do more research on the subject before posting. I see a lot of part numbers recommended, when they have nothing to do with that particular motor.

My post was not directed at you or any other individual, Laddies. It was directed at, as I said, "some of the above posts . . ." You seem to have taken my post as a personal attack on you, though I see no posts by you among them.

The point of my post is that dismissing other posters with derogatory terms is something we are not qualified to do. ("We", as in thee and me.)

Posts with which we disagree are part of this environment. The fact that we disagree does not make them wrong. We are required by our rules to conduct any discussion in a courteous manner.

WITF: Moderators may edit or remove dangerous postings. If you see such a post, just click on "REPORT POST" and explain to us why it should be removed. Our rules do not allow you, or us, to attack the poster any further than to disagree with the post in a courteous manner.

We have sought help here on this forum many times. I can go down to the dock and get as many different answers as I can get here. It is my job..... to determine...... what advice I choose to follow... Some backyard mechanics may have a better idea than the professional. We learned quickly there is no absolute way in doing certain things. I have learned things from a novice that sees things a different way.

There are some issues best left to the profesional, but there are several ideas that come from the novice. I have been a captain of many boats... but that dosen't qualify me anymore than having a drivers license.

This forum has given me ideas that I never would have imagined. I make my own decisions in life.... and work... and all imput is welcome. As a newcomer (new comber) to iboats......don't change!.....Capt. Mike.

If you believe 80% of 20% that I say....you would only be 60% wrong.

Jb, I forget about the report post button.

One one forum I was a member of, I was very enthusiastic about ham radio and recommending it to everybody when they'd come into the forum and ask what radio would be best. Well one time in my enthusiasm I accidentally recommended ham radio for a guy for his business, totally forgetting that was against the law. He banned me for that. So be it, I was wrong and actually was recommending illegal activity. But it wasn't intentional. I didn't even think about it, only that the guys range needs and portability needs fell into the ham radios realm. I totally forgot you can't use it for business. Honest mistake.

So for someone who recommends cracking a case and changing a part that doesn't exist, he might be thinking of a different model of car or something. And I know from aviation school that it's easy to get a part number wrong. Not malicious, just a mistake.

Glad to hear that you do this - a great thing to do for both parties with the obvious goal of getting the misinformation corrected by the misinformer.

Probably true but still a mistake that needs to be corrected.

Then there is the guy that recommends a procedure that is a known way of damaging a drive but insists it is fine after the correction is noted in a later post.

You would think that there was a membership fee being paid reading some of this thread.
Lighten up, don't react to the first reply you get by ripping apart your motor. Wait for a consensus and start to base your decision on that.
This is a free forum with a wide range of contributors. We should all remember that.
Having said that we all need to be civil about it in our responses.

when i run across a post that is totally wrong, info, i do point it out in the thread, and the reasons, the info is wrong. this protect future members, that use the search function.

A lot of negative reactions to both useful and useless input could be prevented by opening as mommicked suggests.

I tend to use, "It seems to me. . . ." or "I think. . ." to be sure that readers understand that what they see is an opinion.

My point, to beat it to death, is that we must treat all posts, and posters with courtesy.

same here... ive came across alot of post that has over 30 veiws... and no help... i usually try to help them to my knowledge(if i know a little about the question) and i let them know that i am no expert... are you guys saying no to mess with it ?

I would say that is definitely not what we mean. It is up to the OP of the the thread to figure out who he'll believe and not believe. I mean if you really don't know anything about the topic just skip it, I know I do. You might be able to add to something someone else said too, that's always an option.

Don't over analyze this.

Perhaps i was a smite hasty, maybe we all ought to air our grievances in open forum, instead of the appropriate place, it's much more colorful to have personal attacks and misconstrued personal attacks, perhaps we should return to the old unintended format of innuendos, insults and redundant argumentation's to get our point across. Perhaps the old adage "What goes around comes around" gets a new twist.

unlike a lot of posters my customers actually do run 50+ miles, some run from here,outer banks of NC to bermuda or the Bahamas, all I am tasked with is is it right when it leaves.
ell I run my boat to work some days and its about a 30 mile round trip.
not every tech has a clue, not every tech with a 5000 doller cool looking tool box knows WTF.
but I dont agree with any label to internet competence, hence my tag line.
most folks cant even identify where it came from.
whats funny is my service manager has a 5000 dollar box with about 500 dollars worth of tools in it.
I have two close out craftsman boxs about 740 dollars for both with almost 10K in tools in them.
he has a tool box cover, I work with mine.
anyone has an issue with me I will be happy to tell them they are either a dumbacx or got red dots.
the sheer amount of stupid information on just this site is staggering sometimes.
however some of the actual techs that do this for a living and keep up with the ever changing EPA and USCG regulations try very hard to provide accurate reasonable information.
but as far as iboats labling posters to there technical competence, nope don try it.
its the internet.
if iboats wishs to post copies of my shcool trainings? that I wont beef I wil upload any mod any cert they wish to see , il even let them post my name, aint like its in the phone book.

Mr Bolt, whether or not you have certified training certificates is irrelevant, IMO. Your credentials have been proven on these forums time and time again.

I believe that to be true for a large handful of other members also. When they talk, I listen.
