The exploded view of my 70 yamaha shows inner and outer exhaust covers....I just want to verify that these are what I need to take off to check out the valves, and not the cylinder head cover.

Not that I know what 'check the valves' really entails.

I need to put the bad cylinder into compression stroke and then blow air through something. If air is leaking I should be able to see/hear where it is coming out.

I'm learning a lot as I go along...but am still REALLY over my head!

thanks for any input!

Re: to look at the valves I need to remove the exhaust covers....right?

my colleague just called...and, embarrassingly, admitted a 'brain fart'....he was thinking 4-stroke instead of 2-stroke.

Thank goodness....I was going crazy trying to figure out what he meant.

I am still going to spray carb cleaner in the cylinders, and open up the exhaust cover to see what is going on.

Engine is probably/possibly shot.

I wonder if there is a market for such engines??!!
