I recently acquired, in lieu of a $500 debt, a 1988 Searay Seville w/ a 3.0L Alpha One. This is my first boat, though I have been around them most my life and help friends and family work on them quite a bit. Since I recently finished off all home projects and just quit smoking, I need a new project.

It was not properly winterized and so far I have found:

The Bad
1. A external crack in the block below the exhaust manifold that leaks water.(No water in oil though)
2. A water leak coming from either a bad exhaust manifold gasket or the manifold has a crack.
3. Oil leaking badly from the timing chain cover while running.
4. Compression test at 90lbs for all 4 cyl, cold test though. (couldn't get running at the time).
5. Stringer for front motor mount has started to rot and sag and needs replacement.
6. Interior vinyl cracked in places but cleans up well.

The Good.
1. After a full tune up and new ignition parts and fuel pump, engine runs fairly good after warms up and will idle.
2. Oil Pressure and Water Temp good.
3. Trim pump & motor good to go.
4. Prop turns fwd and rev
5. Gear case oil looks dirty but no water or metal chips.

Any other things to check or suggestions would be helpful, trying to decide if its worth putting quite a bit of time and money into it?

Thanks

Ayuh,... Check the Transom,....

Sounds like you have a pile of Parts, rather than a Project...
For the Investment it'll cost to have a Running reliable boat,... You can buy a Running boat....
And still have coin for gas...

Thanks Bond-O, I'll check the transom and pull the exhaust manifold tonight.
If both are bad it might be time for Craigs List
