Here's the deal, alpha one outdrive on a boat that was given to me, the gimble housing is corroded away at the bottom edge where the upper bellows clamp around it, had been taken apart to fix by previous owner but he never did it and gave me a boat, an outdrive and a box, sorry 2 boxes of bits. All the parts are there, the upper gear set, bearings and shims were removed and left on the ground and are rusted pretty good, (would replace bearings and races anyway), and the lower and upper units were never split. Here's my question, would it be cheaper to buy a new or reman'd outdrive OR rebuild mine? I am definetly capable of doing it but want to go the least expensive route. I know i need a gimble housing $$$, bellows, bearings, upper gear set maybe, (do you think if i removed the rust somehow they would be alright?) and ill split the units and replace the water pump while im there. The lower seems fine as it shifts forward and reverse, although the idiot took out the castle nut behind the prop and didn't remove the gear set but OH how he tried, (with a hammer and chisel, @#&*%$#!!!, ah its not too bad) so ill need that nut too. I have done some reasearch and would go for a reman but how good is the quality of these things, I think the most expensive part that i need is the gimble housing but i bet i could find one on ebay or something for a good price. The u-joints have a little surface rust but are fine, no slack at all. Any suggestions on my little diallema, (how you spell that word correctly i don't have time to figure out), would be greatly appreciated.
