To Rinse or Not To Rinse ?

I'm nearly done sanding my retirement project. After I wash down the sanded alum with Water/White Vinegar 50/50 solution, do I just let dry or should I hose it off with clean water.

Reason I ask; boat is in my shop, flipped over on sawhorses. Rinsing with clean water would mean trailering it (still flipped) and pulling it outside. Rinsing it with the hose in the shop is out of the question.

Thanks.... :)

Re: To Rinse or Not To Rinse ?

You should be fine just wiping it off with a couple clean rags, never used vinager but that should be fine straight or laquer thinner.

If you have a compressor open the garage door and blow i off good before you wipe it, if not just wiping it should be fine.

You will have to use etching primer on anything that you are going to paint or it won't stick, you can get it at any auto parts stor, 2 cans should do fine on a small tinny like you have.

Some people say just washing it with vinigar will etch the surface which may be true but the problem with painting aliminum is you have to seperate the the aluminum from the paint and etching primer is the only way to do that.

Unlike regular primer you only need a light coat, it will tint the metal yellow but won't fill like regular primer does.

Just painted mine this year too and I worked in a sign shop and painted a ton of aluminum signs

Are you going to roll and tip or spray it?

Get up a pic when it is done, good luck.

Re: To Rinse or Not To Rinse ?

5150:

Thanks for the guidance. I wasn't looking forward to dragging the boat outside and then back inside so I can finish the work on the hull.

I originaly planed to just sand until shinny then polish, buff and seal. I am considering possibly one painted stripe down the gunwhale at the splash rail just to see how that looks. If I decide to do this, I'll probably just rattle it on.
I'm keeping the mfg logo and the factory stripe so I don't want any painting to compete with that effect.

In any event I'll follow your suggestions.

Been battling a cold and high sugar for a couple of days, else I would have gotten back to you sooner.

Many thanks for your help..

AH, few things I like more than polished aluminum, there is a product called Shark Skin, other brands as well, made especially for aluminum, basiclly clear coat but it will keep the nice shine on there for a long long time, with that there is no need to prime.

Good luck and hope you feel better, get up some pics when you are done, we love the pics.

I'll look into that. Thanks again... :)
