Re: To sell or not to sell? AGAIN?
Re: To sell or not to sell? AGAIN?
I've always been into old boats, over the past 30 years I've owned more than a hundred between those I bought for my own use or those that I bought either for parts or to resell.
I rarely buy any to resell, usually I buy either because I like the boat or see potential in it. Often I buy a boat just to upgrade a motor or trailer on one of my boats as well, often selling the rest off as again a complete but different package. Lately I've not been buying much in the effort to lessen the amount I'll have to eventually move but a few have crept into the fleet anyhow, one being my 67 MFG that was in just too nice of shape to refuse. I'm always looking for the perfect boat, or at least something better than I have now. There are a few that will never leave.
I at one time thought that the Starchief would be in that category but I don't think a cabin boat will be of much value to me in a warmer climate and now with the cost of fuel the I really need to eliminate as many trips as I can. The boat is just far better off going to someone that will enjoy it. I would even entertain the idea of a trade for the boat if I got something smaller and of more use to me right now. It's not a matter of the cash, my motivation to sell is driven by the shear bulk of the move. I basically need to lighten the load and thin the herd so to speak.
Being that I spent many years in light fabrication and as many years in a truck repair shop, my collection of tools is also huge, not to mention tractors, bikes, machinery, and other toys I've accumulated over the years. I've considered just selling off everything and rebuying what I need again after the move but most of the items I own were bought long enough ago for far less than I could ever afford to spend these days to replace them with now. There are many of my items which simply cost far more in today's market and with today's current state of the economy, I'd not likely get much if I sold what I already own. Welders, milling machines, lathes, and other metal working tools which I accumulated and fine tuned over the years just cost far more than they did say 30 years ago and to be honest, most items I own just can't be bought anymore.
If the cost of living wasn't so high here I'd stay put but every time I get a tax bill that exceeds what the place cost me years ago, I get re-motivated to uproot and leave this state.
I've also always believed in being self sufficient, I do everything myself. If I can't I buy the tools and learn how. I've all too often paid to have something done that I either didn't wish to do or didn't have the equipment to do myself only to find that it wasn't done anywhere close to my satisfaction. I learned a long time ago that if you want it done right, do it yourself.
Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist, but that thinking has always served me well.
