To Spray or not to spray

I was curious about a topside paint that I can spray without more then a bunny suit and a mask and won't kill myself. I know the two-part poly's like Interlux perfection can't be sprayed without profession equipment because of the possible fatal health implication but I wanted to know if there is a topside paint I can spray. I have a HVLP gravity feed gun. I'm going to tip/roll the topside outside the boat but there is a lot of intricate work on around the console of my bowrider. I figure I will just spray this white (I was going to roll and tip all this but it is to intricate to get a profession looking finish. There will be pools of paint and hangers if I try.)

Thanks for the thoughts!!

Re: To Spray or not to spray

Sometimes its better to buy local and ask them at the store.
If spraying outdoors I don't worry.

Indoors can be dangerous even with the right air feed, I know a guy who almost killed his family upstairs above his garage, I think some of those gasses are cyanides.

Re: To Spray or not to spray

they're isocyanates...

and you are particularly worried about hexamethylene diisocyanate found in imron awlgrip and some of the por15 line.

it CAN be done safely with a high quality charcoal and particulate filter (particulate very important because of aerosolized droplets of isocyanate), BUT the huge problem with this is that you won't know that the filters are saturated until way after your in serious trouble. The lung damage can be permanent and many of the major decomposition (as in original isocyanates reacting and decomposing in your body) are STRONGLY suspected human carcinogens and can cause other serious problems.

If you're talking auto paints, some of the ones that use polymeric isocyanates are much safer and can be used without nearly as much risk using the same type of filters described above and making sure to throw them away rather than reusing them for multiple jobs. All of this is with respect to painting in a well ventilated area such as outdoors. i like dupont nason line products for ease of use and quality in an affordable product. I've used both the fulthane single stage urethane on boat(s) as well as the clear on a boat before without problems.

Hope this is helpful
