Re: To trim tab or not

TMalega, call nauticus and find out what size they recommend and then order them from them or right here on iboats. The boat dealer is going to charge you twice what you should pay. The composite ones are probably what they will recommend, don't know what size though. I'm guessing the SX like Joe said is what you will need.

Definately check with nauticus before you buy anything to make sure you get the right ones. They shouldn't cost more than $150.00 bucks for that boat. Don't waste the money having them installed, install them yourself. They are easy to install, drill, drill bit, screw bit for drill, socket set or two adjustable wrenches and your all set. Take you about 45 minutes to an hour. If you get them, let us know how they perform. Good luck.

Re: To trim tab or not

Sweet i will call them this evening hopefully or i may go to the website and try emailing them as i am not allowed that many personal calls at work. They dont care about forums but calls are different. Cant answer it if i am on it. Lol i will try that this evening for sure though if nothing else. Thanks guys i like the idea of the tabs better then the foil from everything i have read. Not to mention it does like to lean to one side hard when turning. It doesnt matter which side if it starts to turn that way it will lean over and get close to the water.

Ok so i emailed the kind people at nauticas and they actually suggested the sx series which was the hard rubber ones that were suggested here. So i ordered them bad boys up for less then 130 for the set and shipping. Should have them by weds according to the website. Thanks for the suggestions and will keep updated after i get them on and hopefully out this saturday.

Re: To trim tab or not

Ok so to update the post i put the smart tabs on this weekend took about a hour. Nothing difficult had a scary moment when i drilled to far in on accident and found a little water and garbage on the bit. Let it drain and dry out filled with 5200 like the dvd said to use, and was just about to head to the lake when i took a sec to read the back of the 5200 tube which said to let it dry for 7 days prior to putting in the water. Dang it!!! It was a beautiful weekend 15 mph wind and 85-90 degrees. Now thanks to my project i had to wait to go to the lake. Thanks for all the advice guys i will update when i have a chance to test them.

I had mine in the water 2hrs after install. I also used 5200. I didnt have any leaks and one screw on each side came thru my transom. You can see the 5200 pushing thru and it was there and hard a week later. Im sure oppinons will vary.;)

If you actually had water drain out of your transom you may need to check that out.:(
Mine was somewhat less than rock solid, but not holding water. They wont be perfect in an older boat, unless someone rebuilt it. Rotten transoms sink boats sometimes.

Put the unused 5200 in the fridge, it will last a little longer that way, incase you need it else where.:D

They really say to use 5200? What if you want or need to remove the tabs? I would think they would recommend to use 4200. What do others think? I'm curious since I plan to install the SX tabs in my Four Winns H180 in the Spring.

The "unremovable-ness" of 5200 I feel is largely exaggerated. Don't get me wrong, it's good stuff, but I think if you had to remove them, you could certainly do so.

I think they actually say "a small amount of marine sealant in each hole", no brand or type stated. Ive used more than one 3m product on other holes w/scews in my previous boats. 5200 seemed to hold them better. Ive heard people say it will actually pull the gealcoat off if used like peanutbutter under something and then removed. The tabs come with pretty short screws as to try to not penatrate the inside of the hull. Thats why i used 5200.

OK. Thanks for the good explanation.

Well on the video i had in the package it said marine sealant then he held up the 5200 and said something like "this is what we recommend" or something along those lines.

Re: To trim tab or not

Well i got a email this morning saying there has been a question asked if i had a chance to use the smart tabs or not. However i have not been able to find the question on this post but in the off chance that my computer is just not showing the question. I figured i would answer it, i have not had a chance to try them out, my weekends off are not on fair weather weekends. 35 degrees and 20 mph winds are not my idea of fun on the lake. Hopefully i will have a free weekend soon. And can report back on it.

Re: To trim tab or not

Cut to the bottom line.

Small boats are in serious danger, because they go out too far to get back before the waves get scary!!!!!!!!!!

I fish almost every summer day in the ST Lawrence River. BAD BAD squalls area. In a Lowe 16' Aluminum SHORT SHAFT 15" high transom with a 9.9 motor. I NORMALLY have to watch all around for cruiser wakes. They will cause me to scoot back & forth to ride up & down the biggies. I get maybe 30 gallons at worst in the boat. Pump does great.

Bottom line................I would NEVER EVER take another person out in it & go out to water deeper than we can stand up in and walk back to shore dragging the water filled boat behind us.

KNOW when not to go out..............IF you do get in way over your abilites. Have a planned beaching area or a persons dock that you simply use to save your life & the boat.

You DO NOT NEED PERMISSION from anyone to save your life.
