i have a 85 150 johnson with a VRO. i heard a lot of scuttlebutt about them. i took mine off but, it's a pain mixing 60 gal of fuel. im putting it back on. does anybody have good info on the VRO, are they bad or good..thanx
I have a 1985 140 VRO. No issues to date. A little maintenance and thats about it. Gives a nice puff of smoke with a cold start but that at least lets you know the oil is coming through and I love the smell of 2 stroke first thing in the morning !!!
Many folk will disagree and say they are awful.
There is a very interesting thread out here discussing this subject.
The original 1985 VRO systems have mostly been replaced by VRO2 or OMS sytems. If you still have the black pulse limiter, instead of the blue and gold, you might want to consider an upgrade.
Hi. My pops back in 88 bought a 140 evinrude with VRO, back in 2004 we sold it to some family friends and it still runs like it did in 88 with out turning a wrench! Just regular maintenance on it. The VRO can go at anytime with out warning but I have yet to see it happen personally. I also run a carbed 89 Merc with oil injection and have not had a problem with it yet. Sure does beat mixing 100 litres of fuel 50:1. Saves more money aswell since this motor goes through gas very quickly.
