I have a 2 1/2 HP Tohatsu motor that although it ran and ideled OK, started to miss.. It would run OK but you could hear it kick on and off. After about 15 minutes of running it would quit. No spark was evident. After about 3 hours, you could get spark again and it will run for another 15 minutes and then the same thing happens again. I have disconnected the kill switch to eliminate it from the problem. I am lost and seeking ideas on what is wrong or what I should do. Thank you

When you say ignition coil, are you talking about the one outside of the flywheel casing that has the sparkplug wire moulded into it, or the coil on the inside of the flywheel (magneto coil). Thanks

Something is failing when it gets hot. Get the wife's hair dryer and start the engine cold. Point the dryer real close to the suspect part and hold it there. If it dies sooner than expected, you've found the faulty electrical component. I believe Bear is refering to the coil with the spark plug wire, which of course is the ignition coil. It may or may not be that, but you should be able to narrow it down by warming it up.

get a heavy duty heat gun and put it on low! most modern day hair dryers don't get hot enough!

Re: Tohatsu 2.5 HP Ignition Problems

Thanks to everyone for all of the help.. I was lost.. I replaced the coil and tried all of your suggestions. Even the local repair shop was at at loss. This morning out of pure frustration, I cleaned the points with some emery cloth and gave it one more try.. One pull on the starter and it finally ran like it was brand new. I had looked at the points before, but never cleaned them. I guess that I MISSED THE POINT. Thanks again for all of your inputs. This forum is invaluable.
