Re: Tohatsu 20hp vs 25 hp

As I understand it The restrictions are not aimed at 2 strokes but motors that don't meet CARB requirements. The Etec and other direct injection 2 strokes meet or exceed CARB requirements.
The official boats on lake Tahoe use Etec motors.Tahoe Is a fully restricted lake.
Weights for electric start varies from 146-158 depending on the exact package.

Re: Tohatsu 20hp vs 25 hp

By no means am i knocking the 25hp 4stroke merc/tohatsu(same outboard)but that motor is way to much for that tracker.Extremely heavy and i had a major time getting my boat on plane(j16 carolina skiff) with it no matter what prop i used or setting it was on,or switched the weight around in the boat 10 different ways.It just seemed to lack power. The motor ran great and was like a car motor as it idles great,it just gave me to many fits as i tried everything to get the boat on plane with that motor(it was way to heavy, looks almost like a 40hp 2stroke it's so big).I have a brand new 15hp 2stroke yamaha on a brand new 1442 alumacraft which is heavier then your tracker by like 20 to 30lbs and with me,wife, kid and all my gear(close to 800lbs or more with motor included) we pushed over 22mph gps with the stock prop.I have a 10.5 pitch that is going on next can't wait for that.I would think the 20hp tohatsu would do a few mph better and would be a 100%better choice then the 25.

I go to my local yamaha dealer which i have been going to for like 20 yrs and they refuse to even keep a 25hp 4stroke yamaha in stock because of how much of a weight difference it is from the 20hp 4stroke.The extra amount of weight you will carry to gain a measly 5hp is not worth the trouble. The 20hp 4stroke tohatsu has a way better gear ratio also which will give you better power to get on plane verses the extra weight you would have to push with the 25.The 20hp on the tracker should fly.

Also i use ethanol gas and have never had a problem.I use a stabilizer call k100 here in fl.I don't know if they have a website but it is the same exact product as sentry that is also sold in fl.They have a website called sentrytreatments.com.Check it out. It's a little pricey but well worth the money. It has outlasted any other fuel treatments i have ever used and belive me i have spent hundreds on it all.I use it in my car, lawn mower, outboard and any engine you want as long as gas goes in it.You can order right off the site that is what i do.

I have let my lawn mower sit for 6mths straight and with the sentry in it she fires up in one shot, with out it forget it.I would not let any engine sit if you can avoid it but this stuff does what is advertised to the t.Good luck

Where did you find an Etec for $3500? That might be a good option if shipping isn't too bad. Right now I can get the Tohatsu with free shipping to my door and no sales tax! There are some incredible deals on brand new 2 stroke Yami's but they have to be shipped to and installed by a dealer:( for the warranty.

There is not much of a difference, at dealer cost, when going from brand to brand in the same hp. There can be a huge difference in the price at the retail level depending on the greed of the dealer and the buying power of the dealer. Also, you can't have a remote model Tohatsu shipped to you nor can any Tohatsu of 25 hp or larger be shipped to you. Like Yamaha, Tohatsu requires that those models be installed by the dealer.

Re: Tohatsu 20hp vs 25 hp

I am impressed with all the replies on this forum. Great group of knowledgable people on this board. I have decided to go with the 20hp Tohatsu or Merc if I can found a deal on one. The transom strength of the Tracker is a major concern of mine although the 15 footer is braced better than it's small cousins. I just can't see spending $1,000 to $1500 more to get 5hp more plus 60lbs extra metal. There is nothing wrong with the Evinrude I currently have but I like to fish in the boils below Pickwick dam and also make some long runs up and down the river of 20 to 30 miles at times and would just be more comfortable with a newer motor as the one I have was purchased off Ebay this spring and I have no history on this motor.

Blatant greed on my part...I have both available:) Did you want a short or long, manual or electric, remote or tiller, with or without trim?

Yeah. I'll bet that is absolutely true.

I don't think you can have any of the higher HP (new) outboards shipped to you.....

If you buy a Tohatsu (regardless of model), you're not going to be unhappy with it!

Tohatsu 20 tiller short shaft, electric, no T/T $2700 to my doorstep :)
I guess I have been lucky that in 40+ years of boating I have only had to
take one engine to a dealer for repair. 115 merc tower of power I blew up after
trying to fix a timing issue on my own when I was young. Expensive lesson learned LOL

Guru-just ordered a 20 Merc from you!!! Went with the Merc since I have Merc dealers nearby whereas the nearest Tohatsu servicer is 80 miles away. Figure resale on the Merc may be better later on also for whatever reason.

It will be shipped free to the installing dealer. The smaller 20hp on down are shipped to your door. I have seen better prices on the new Mercs lately on other sites such as EBay so shop around. When I bought my 20hp from this place they had the best price at the time but not now. Example, I just bought a new Merc 2.5hp for $700 of EBay 2 months ago. Haven't even cranked it yet. It is going on an 8 ft BassHunter boat.

Re: Tohatsu 20hp vs 25 hp

As an update to this original post I will add I am quite pleased with the Merc 20hp. I received a factory recall notice on this motor before I ever even used it concerning some crankcase bolts that may not have been torqued properly from the factory and my local Merc dealer took care of this in a matter of hours even though it required pulling the power head. I had the boat & motor back the same day. I only have about 30 hours on the motor so far and it performs great. Nearly as fast as the old 25hp Evinrude it replaced. Sips fuel!!! I do run the carbs dry after every use even if I think I will use it the next day and run Stabil Marine Ethanol in the gas. The carbs are not covered under warranty, so I am trying to not have a problem here as I have read others having. I do reccomend these motors to anyone looking.

Re: Tohatsu 20hp vs 25 hp

Thanks for the links on the Etec! I have to totally agree with the two stroke bans. Even in a free state like Tenn the greenies are slowly starting to get a foothold here and there. My biggest issue with two strokes is with the crappy gas we have today, trying to stabilize oil mixed fuel is now next to impossible for more than a few weeks. I am aware of the oil injection on most newer 2 strokes but what is left in the fuel system during storage can be major issues if carbed. Not sure about injection system issues that may exist.
On direct injection motors ie: Etec the oil and gas are not mixed together they are injected.
