Too low at the stern ?

hi folks , first time boater and first post /question. I ran my boat thru its " sea trails " (i.e on the pond) yesterday and it appeared to sink alot lower at the stern when I gave it just a small amount of forward throttle. Is this normal ? Ive heard this is called "getting out of the hole" but how deep of a hole are we talkin ? Ive lowered the engine to its max trim , maybe the engine is too heavy for the boat? Its a 75hp evinrude etek, boat LOA is ~16ft + 16" engine pod, fiberglass over wood hull.

Need more info on like is there water coming over the transom and when you do take off the sterm does dip a bit or seems to and the bow rises you have to play with your trim

Measurements won't tell us much with 16" setback pod. But pics will and some of the boat sitting dead in the water.

Thanks for replying, Ray there isn't any water coming in over the transom and im not sure what you mean by measure from bottom of the boat to the prop ? The cavitation plate is pretty much level with the bottom and the trim down is at its max.

Hi GA thanks for replying, I will try to get some pics of the boat on the water but it sits quite level at rest and when it gets on plane. its only when I first throttle up. For what its worth ,Heres a pic of it sitting on the trailer about to be hauled off for sea trials.

Nice rig! What brand is she?

Is the bottom of the pod even with the bottom of the hull?

Thanks GA , I built it from plans , took 5 years ( of summers ) to get to this stage. The pod is roughly 2 1/2" above the hull.
Ray it was about maybe 1/4 throttle.

Thats a lot of setback, did the plans specify the 2.5" above the bottom of the hull? Plans for pod were for a similar size boat w a similar type hull bottom?

Sounds perfectly normal to me... Give it more throttle n get up on plane.

If the bow is rising too much then try putting some gear in the bow

jbcurt, its level with the hull not the pod. The pod was an add-on not part of the original plans. The pod is 2 1/2" above the bottom of the hull because of the drain plugs. So you think the pod was a bad idea ? Ive only heard and read of good reviews for pods ,not much about the cons.

+1 with Smoke. I think she's dropping at the stern as most boats do. You need more throttle to push her through the wallowing up to plane.

Do you have much boating experience? I know when I started mumble-mumble years ago, I thought the stern was gonna go under. You kind of lose your reference when the bow lifts up and you have to trust that she will go on plane.

GA ,I have very little boating experience and I have practically zero experience with an outboard, this is my first boat, im learning on the fly.
The plans were from an old 1976 boat builders manual called sea angler, not very detailed but enough to get you started. Yes that was my thoughts exactly , I thought the bow was rising too much and the transom would go under.

Maybe trim tabs? Smart tabs are pretty inexpensive and worked wonders on lifting my stern. Maybe check the bilge, too? I find a leak in my exhaust gasket that bogged me up good. Just my thoughts.

If the AV plate is even with the bottom of the hull it's too low, you will need to raise it up several inches for it to ride at the correct level. Having it too low will cause the stern to dig down deeper when accelerating. But, what you describe is normal to some degree on all boats.

That is a sweet looking boat, you must be very proud. I like Lenco trim tabs. They would keep the bow down, therefore raising the rear. Enjoy!
