my first time using resin....boaters world cheepo 20 dollars a gallonm boaters resin(polyester of course)

i mixed 1 quart with 17cc hardner, its raining and i thought i needed extra hardner to compensate for the humidity, we are doing this in the garage with the door opened... before we(wife and i ) were able to use 1/4 of what we mixed, the bucket turned rock solid , as did our brushes, and the bucket is now unbelievably hot.

temp outside is 83 degress....

i remixed a new 16ounce cup with less harder and all is well...

just wanted to do this post for anybody wishing to learn from my mistakes...

mikey

BTW, we are coating a 12 foot sailboat hull that a friend gave us for FREE with resin, it is ugly and had small holes and pits, then we are gonna paint it with rustoleum marine paint wich we got at lowes for 5$ a quart

PMM Whenever I mix I like to use 2 liter soda bottles. I cut them down to quart size and toss them when I am done. Better to use a hair too little then a hair too much on the catalyst.

Bob

Mikey...if you aren't using glass or some sort of fabric with the resin you are not gonna like it when it all starts falling off...just a thought :)

probably less than a year, but hey have some fun. consider this an educational experience! If you want you can pay someone to have YOU do this, it's called continued education, which is about $15,000 a year.
The fun and time spent with your wife on this project is priceless!

If you sanded it well, before applying the resin, it might last awhile......

You Know you got Too much harder, when the resin Smokes,+ Melts the bucket........
Been there, Done that......

Re: too much hardner.... guess what happened?

thanks all , i have since mixed wood flour and made peanut butter to fill some larger dents and holes.. all with info right here ! :)

ive mixed the resin 4 times now since yesterday for various projects, and feel very confident. so confident, i ordered 20 yards of glass cloth, matt , whatever to redo the flor of my boat, other boat, as it wa sonly taped on the seams and not the hole floor.

dont worry, ill be back again this week with more "learning how to's" !!!

Mike, don't dispare. Poly resin should last on your sailboat for quite a while, if the hull was clean and dry. Years ago I coated a pair of wooden waterskiis with poly resin. It outlasted varnish.
