Well After I rebuilt the top end and everything on my mercury 1150 I took it out for the first time today. It ran great and all, but I was going back to the dock to make some adjustment's and I hear a "boom". It wouldn't go in gear and I took it out of the water and found that there was about a 3" hole on the lower unit How much should I expect to pay for a used lower unit for a 71 mercury 1150 115hp?

Any ideas? I can't believe out of everything it had to go Probably the most expensive part of the engine.

You just have to search around...Some times you have to buy a seized outboard to get a lower end.I think just about any six cylinder's lower end would work,but newer ones might have a different gear ratio.But I have to ask...did you check the lowers oil when you did the water pump?Or did you hit something?

Shawn, A LU from any of the 70s and early 80s inline 4 or 6 cylinder will fit your motor. Some of the 4 cylinder inline motors had a 2.3::1 gear ratio. if you got one of these you need to go up 2" in pitch on the prop.

Yah I changed the fluid when I reinstalled the lower unit after doing the water pump. The old fluid wasn't milky looking. My question is how much should I offer for a lower unit? My driveshaft and prop appears to be alright. I'd rather buy one that I can just drop in and go.

Wow...

I looked around.Its up too you.I found em for 100 bucks...If you take the whole boat.500 bucks...if you take the hole engine(bad power head.)ect...

Did you take the guts out yet?Im curios of what let loose....

It was a hundred bucks if you took the whole thing.Including the busted boat,bad outboard(powerhead),ect.A hundred bucks sounds good unless you don't have a way to dispose of all the other garbage.Plus it was a pick up only.Im on the west coast,and it was somewhere on the east coast.So not worth it to me...

I hope you get it fixed...soon.summer is almost over.I went last season without a boat and hated it.
