TOOLS?

Looking for tool kit (Crestliner 1850 Sportfish w/Yamaha F150). First boat, will do easy maint. and minor repairs.<br /><br />Recommendations?<br /><br />Waterproof case?

Good news and bad news.<br /><br />You will find all sorts of "marine tool kits" in the various catalogs (West Marine, Overton's, etc). They are usually inexpensive because they quickly corrode to crap in a marine environment (unless you want to spend every day coating each tool with WD40 and wiping them down).<br /><br />Stainless steel tools are available from speciality manufacturers, but they are VERY expensive.

Are you talking tools to use while on the water or at home. If you say on the water, just what repairs do you have in mind since on the water repairs will generally require parts that you won't have with you. For the boat, a prop nut wrench, pliers, screwdrivers, and a basic wrench set is about all you'll have need for. At home you will need a more extensive tool kit. Home Depot has a very nice kit for about 40 bucks that has sockets, screwdrivers, box cutter, allen wrenches, adjustable wrench, pliers, etc in a nice case. You should also have a multitester (volt-ohmeter) or test light to help locate electrical gremlins and a compression tester to keep and eye on the condition of the engine over time.

I've got my own tool kit. The usual, screwdrivers, plyers, sparkplug wrench, fuses, electrical tape, sockets, clamps,.....should I go on. <br />Point is you can put something together as every tool kit will have something different and you may not get exactly what you need/want. Take a look at what each one offers and maybe make your own. But they will definitley rust like "swist" says. Tools are a must!!!

I make up a kit for whatever vehicle or boat it goes in. I survey the vehicle and put in only the items needed. For example, my old Johnson outboard really only has three sizes of nuts and boltheads on it, so I need only those wrenches and sockets, along with the sparkplug socket (always a must with a two-stroke motor). One of those four-way screwdrivers, a little box of crimp wire connectors and a pair of diagonal wire-cutters pretty much do it. Necessary cotter pins and shear pins, etc. It all fits in a little plastic toolbox.<br /><br />I keep the lug wrench and jack for the trailer in the tow vehicle.

Rusting of tools can be reduced by keeping them in a military surplus ammo case. They are water resistant, relatively compact, very tough and seal tightly.

I bought one of those all in one tool kits at Sam's club about 6 0r 7 years ago. You know, complete set of metric and SAE sockets and open end/box end wrenches, allen wrenches, multi-tool screwdriver, pliers, etc. I keep it in the boat at all times and it hasn't corroded much at all. (very little). In a pinch, I do believe it will do almost anything I'd need it to do. That said, when i go on a real boating trip, I always throw in my regular hand-tool kit which has better tools and more complete. But in case I forget it, or for those day trips, etc. that basic kit works well. I just keep it in a dry place.

Make sure you can change the sparkplugs with the wrench you select. I need an open end wrench to change one of my plugs.

Roscoe speak the truth. Probably the most common on the water intervention (that and changing the fuel filters), and often the designated "spark plug wrench" doesn't even work.

THANKS for all the posts!!!<br /><br />Upinsmoke, where did you find the surplus amo kit? Can't find one.<br /><br />Specifically what tolls do you reccomend I take on the boat? Prop Wrench, Sockets, etc?

I bought Craftsman tools from Sears. If they rust, Sears will replace them under warrantee. <br /><br />To prevent or retard rust, I spray tool protector on them and keep them in ziplock bags (sorted by type). The problem with prepackaged tool sets is that they usually include tools you don't need and don't include some of the ones that you do need.

I see them all the time in hole-in-the-wall surplus type stores, second hand/junk stores and such. I've got two in my garage which, in the 80s, I had set up with foam inserts for cameras and lenses while on float trips. Heavy, but effective. I've found pelican boxes to be more effective, but only because I can afford them now.

The way I build my tool and parts kit for each boat is any maintenance I do on the boat when done I look at the tools I used then buy those tool to keep on the boat. I also make sure I have a good set of plugs, points, Condenser, all sizes and type fuses. a extra spark plug wire. Also a jumper wire and bottle of oil types I use. Some WD40, silcone spray, and cleaner. As far as the tool box your can get dry boxes with oring seals and almost any boat store. I personally find a plastic tool or fishing tackel box that will hold the tools I need then throw in one of thoes drying bags.
