Hi , I have a 1973 Silverline boat with the Mercruiser 140 and stern drive unit. I removed the top cover for inspection just now and the bearing underneath of it has a rough spot on one roller. The race looks bad. It appears that the bearing is pressed on the shaft. Is that true? If it is I plan to just replace the race and hope for the best.
Any suggestions?
I know the proper way would be to take the boat in and have the entire unit rebuilt. The problem with this is that the boat is not worth the cost of having this done. I had to have it done 2 years ago when the gears went out and with used gears the price was still close to 800 bucks.
I would like to replace the rubber O-ring that is under the top cover. What is this O-Ring called? I will order it from here as soon as I can find the name and part number. How should I hold the O-ring in place as I reassemble the cover. Should I use a silicone seal?
Have a nice Day
