Re: top spark plug

The small hole next to the top spark plug is for a heat sensor. Not every motor has one so you're not missing anything. You just need a new sparkplug.....but what is that one gone, was it not firing? Do your homework.

Re: top spark plug

I am temted to buy this boat and motor. The boat is a steury s1500 with this merc 80hp on it. I just took the covers off and I can turn the motor with difficalt by hand (compression). The motor was covered with a tarp and looks like new condition from the out side. the boat looks like a good boat that was sitting outside for 10 years. owner wanted $500, is it worth it to buy with eyes closed. She does not know match about it.

I would do a compression test first!

How long was the sparkplug out of the top cylinder? If the engine has been sitting with this port open you could have some serious cylinder corrosion.

Getting a boat and motor for that price and expecting not to have some problems is probably a fantasy. The good side is that you're not paying a lot for it so you should have some money left over to get it into shape.

If the boats worth 500.00 by itself then buy it. Consider the motor shot to avoid dissapointment and then go to work on it and enjoy the experience of getting it running.

Better start by draining, flushing, purging all old fuel out of the system, then probably a new water pump impeller, change oil in lower unit, new plugs, fresh gas, etc., then if you're real lucky that motor may surprise you and run like a top!..I hope so, please let us know how it does!

Before I started all that, I'd pop all the plugs and spray the cylinders with a good blast of oil to help soothe any rust that may be there. I used to do that as a precautionary step any time I wanted to crank an engine (any engine) that had been sitting up for awhile.

Then, I'd go to the carbs and while cranking the engine, spray oil into the carb throats to coat the crank and rod bearings. With the plugs out and a fresh battery you should be able to spin her up to an adequate rpm to suck the oil into the vitals and lubricate them.

Then go after Mr. Graham's fine work.

Deep Creep (Sea Foam in a spray) would do nicely and it is combustible so that when you are ready to fire it up, you have a coating that will ignite and burn off. Autozone, or NAPA,
some WW's too have it.

Re: top spark plug

Thank you all
I have taken the plugs out and sprayed light oil in the sylinders. I will also spray oil in the carps(have not thought of that) and let it sit for a bit. I saw this boat in a back yard and thought that it is exactly what i want, so i just knock on the door and ask the lady. I can now get rid of my old fishing boat it is a 63 with a 63 40hp evenrude i took a grinder and cut the hole nose part of the dek open to make it more suitable for fishing. She is ugly as hek but she surved me for a few years. That old 40hp is still running good for its age.
