Re: Total Hip Replacement

Thanks for the well wishes.

I've walked with a very pronounced limp since the age of 14. It never stopped from doing anything (canoeing, jetskiing, backpacking etc.) except for the last 5 years.

Well, in less than 5 months, I'm better now than at the age of 14.....

I was wondering if in our large boating group there are any more 'bionic hips' and what their longevity has been. I've been told about 10 to 15 years based on activity level.

I'm sedentary for work but walk best part of 3 miles per day (Dog) and love every minute of it.

Tx.

Joe

You get out there and put that hip through it's paces and you'll soon find you're doing things thought impossible a few years ago. Take the initive and start something challenging and formidible like even more fishing. No one will blame you for enjoying life and if the darn thing plays up in 15 to 20 years then you'll only be 55ish so another replacement would be well worth it!
Our family includes a hip replacement and she's getting about just fine and has been ballroom dancing again for the past two years. She reckons she'll get it done again when she's 80ish!
Good going to you, you deserve to enjoy after so much suffering, my thoughts will be with you this day as I go to a planning meeting for a new hospital. You're the reason we have them in the first place!
Ross

Congratz on your new ball joint! I've had mine for 10 months now and it really pizzes me off because I waited so long to have it done. I didn't suffer as long as you but I suffered long enough.
The Dr. that did mine had done thousands before me and has it down pat. He tried some new instruments of me that he had made himself and as a result, he did mine in a 10cm. incision. I'll include a few fotos.
Good luck with yours and do all those excercises they tell ya to do. The Dr. also told me to expect 20yrs. but if lasts only 10yrs., I'd do it again tomorrow.

Re: Total Hip Replacement

Congrats on the hip... Enjoy it no matter how long it lasts! You can rest assured that by the time it needs to be replaced again the state of the art will have improved so much that you'll be just as pleased with the next one and will probably recover even quicker!

My mother in law is 70... she's had both hips, both knees and now both shoulders replaced! Each time the recovery times were shorter and the technology and materials had improved. She only recently retired from nursing and gets around just fine. She continues to garden and be active. at her age she's not expected to outlive her new joints but they do work great! At your age you can look forward to the new and improved models of the future! :)
