I store mine down in the winter and tape a gallon ziplock over the back of the prop so water/snow doesn't get in there and freeze, but does that have anything to do with the OP question? Naw, I tow mine up to keep from replacing my skeg.

Its been almost a week since the OP posted. Everybody assumed he meant on the trailer, but he hasn't come back to clarify his question.

Tow with it up. If you can lock using the hydralics, do so. If it is an older mercury trim system using 2 rams mounted outside of the transom bracket the motor is free to bounce around, even when the tilt lock is used. On these units is where a transom saver will do some good. On the units where the Hydralics lock the motor solid a transom saver can actually damage the transom cause if the boat shifts even a tiny amount forward or backward the transom has to absorb the stress.
