I tried to adjust my tps sensor yesterday, upon checking the voltage i found .49 volt throttle closed ,3.78 volts WOT. reference voltage is 5.0 . I took the tps out and checked it's range ,it went from .1 volt to 4.99 volt full open to full closed, also very smoothly,no gliches.placed it back on readjusted it to closed to WOT same voltage are before, is the tps bad or should i be looking at something else? also would the voltage being low at WOT.keep the engine from making full power?engine is 97 ox66 225 hp.

I need to figure out how to adjust my TPS. Can you give me some tips?

Thanks

Re: TPS sensor

Tip number one would be to obtain a service manual specific to the engine. If you don't buy one, check your local library. You also don't tell us what engine size, year, model you have. Yes, low TPS voltage tells the ECU the throttle is not wide open. Installed on the engine, the throttle linkage will cause the TPS to not return to the same position it does off the engine. Same for WOT. The idle and WOT values will likely not be those you measured with the TPS off the engine.

Re: TPS sensor

I tried a new tps sensor today, same problem!! when adjusted to .48volt closed, wot is 3.80 volt appox.i can not get voltage above this level with out raising the lower voltage ! the referance voltage is appox. 5 volts.I have reset the trottle linkage via the manual,so at this point can someone tell me where else to look??I also have a problem with the # 4 cyl fouling the plug badly, compression is even on all cyl 100#+ all cyl have good spark. 97 ox66 225hp thanks.

Re: TPS sensor

Not a pro here. But how old are the low pressure fuel pumps ?

Re: TPS sensor

This subject has peaked my interest. Are TPS' set by voltage or by resistance?? From doing a search I've seen where some need to be set at 120 ohms but have also read where a particular voltage has to be set at WOT.

Re: TPS sensor

set the TPS to the specified voltage. the 93 models were about .56 volts plus or minus about .02 volts.the 97 models usually set about the same with the throttle shutter fully closed then reset the idlespeed screw to about .62V and your idle speed will be close. the TPS controls the ign timing and the fuel injectin cycle for acceleration and deacceleration. you must use a digital meter.
your WOT voltage seems about right. the 5 volts is a reference voltage generated by the ECU. the TPS pick off, the one your measuring, is a feed back from the pick off wiper on the resistor. I dont have my service manuals he in Caracas and today I just got back from Rio Chico and at 5am I leave for lake Guri to attempt some pavon and payara.
the correct procedure is in the service manual and will require the idle screw to be backed off, count the turns, and the voltage set. there may be a tech bulliten on that model I cant remember.
normal cause of fouling plugs is dirty or defective O2 senor. needs periodic maint, bad low pressure pumps or a bad resistor cap on the spark plug, normal cause of high speed power loss is low fuel presure on the 35PSI rail due to a clogged VST filter bad low pressure pumps or a fuel restriction between the low presure pumps and the liquid in the gas tank.
sounds like someone needs to do a bit of studying how and why EFI and the feed back sensors work, parts are very expensive for yamahas.
a quick test to verify the tps is with a timing light, if the timing advances to about 21 degrees or so, or whatever the manual says, at WOT. a bad CPS will create power loss issues but will lock the timing. there is a chart and its posted here someplace if the search function works about what trouble codes do what with the idle and WOT timing and fuel control. if the O2 sensor is dirty or the draw tube clogged they tend to run rich at idle and burn #1 piston above 4000 RPM. to attepmt to test this system you will need a diagnostic lamp, a high pressure fuel gauge, the O2 sensor test harness and the tune up spec guide.its an incredibly simple system that will test itself if you let it.
so far I have not seen anything posted on your TPS values that I would consider a problem. remember that throttle shutters fully closed means removing the link rod or loosening all the screws and making sure the shutter is in the fully closed position.

Re: TPS sensor

thanks rodbolt but i have done all of that, cleaned & checked o2 sensor changed 3 plug caps that were bad including #4, checked pulser coil(resistence check),replaced low pressure pumps, adjust oil link rod, cleaned all grounds, checked all sensors, now I am at a loss as to what to do next the engine was recently rebuilt by a yamaha mechanic???? and i have already found many things that he did not do correctly. But that is another story. The manual states that the wot voltage should be 5.0-5.25,but i see no way that can be reached given the range of the tps,the only reason i tried a new tps is the book did not give aresistive range and said to replace it if you could not get the range of voltage. any help you might be able to give would be greatly appreciated. thank you..
