Hello all I am new here and just wondering if any of the members could give me some advice.Myself and my father are thinking about buying a brand new Tracker boat a " Tracker pro guide V16WT".It is a beautiful looking boat and we would use it on the river where we live but heres the thing during the summer months we used to go out to sea a lot on our old boat about three or four miles offshore and while I know the Tracker would be fine for the river we wondered what it would be like at sea ,our dealer said it would be fine but we would like an independent opinion. It certainly looks like it could handle a fair old swell with the deep V and all but the last thing we would want is to be swamped and have to call the coastguard!!

Re: Tracker

Welcome to iboats. as with any boat, you have to watch conditions, and learn what your particular boat will take. with the 70hp, you will be able to move out pretty quickly, if conditions start to get bad. have the proper equipment on board. salt water trolling motor is you are going to be using it in salt water. looks like a pretty stable boat.

Re: Tracker

For the ocean I would get a bigger boat, even if it meant a used boat instead of a new one.

Re: Tracker

Around LI there would be very FEW days the wind was calm enough to venture on the ocean , and there is a LOT of time you can not even go in the bays

So the wind conditions in your area are a BIG factor

Re: Tracker

It appears to me that at 1244 lbs it may be fairly beefy but at the same time somewhat limited at a max of 75 hp.the few other boats I checked in that weight were usually 17 ft and rated at 90hp or more.
I wonder why a 1200 lb boat would be rated at only 75 hp.You may want to look up similar boats and check the metal gauge.and hp.
Tracker did have a series of boats with structure failures forward. They popped up here on a regular basis a couple of years ago.I haven't seen any postings in some time so maybe they have solved the problem.
Folks do go off shore but you need to be well informed and equipped with comminications, kicker backup, weather reports, common sense, etc.Personally I sure wouldn't go very far.

I think is doable but not worth the truble and the salt in that rig.

Re: Tracker

The Pro-Guide V-16 WT is a nice boat, and there's a special deal on it now, but it only comes with a 20" transom, and that could be problematic. Unfortunately, it looks like it would run about another US$6k to move into the next Tracker deep-V that has a 25" transom.

I would add one other consideration about boats of that type, aside from all
that's been well covered. And that point is that boats of that type are designed
to be used with high seats, and that means top heavy usage.

I would rule those out for offshore or even bay use for 99% of the time.
When it's picture perfect smooth water, ok, but that's about 1% of the time.
The bigger and deeper models are better suited for big water.

Keep looking, the deals are coming around the corner on all models!
