Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

Here in Canada, it has been ruled that it is against your constitutional rights to have to pay the ticket.
The cameras have been an issue for some time now.
They argue that if I lend my car to a friend and he/she goes through a red light, why do I have to pay for it.
I guess what they are saying is that no-one can say whether it is the owner of the said vehicle who is driving it, or someone else.
I've gone through a red light whilst towing my boat. The boat trailer caught the last part of the light(which was red), and I never got any ticket in the mail. I saw the camera take the picture, but no fine in the mail.
Maybe they have some sympathy for people who tow trailers? I don't know.

I agree KaGee. That situation seems like a serious conflict of interest.

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

Here in Aus it's a police state. Cameras for speeding, red lights, city surveillance, petrol stations, you name it they got 'em. We get a licence with 12 points attached to it. Minimum loss is 2 points for speeding... even if you're only 5km/h over. 30 km/h (20mph) or more over OR doing more than 130km/h and it's an automatic ban for three months plus up to AUS$1100 (US$850)! After living in Germany and coming back here I lost my licence for three months... bast@rds... all of them. Aus is probably the greatest place around for boating, but driving? Forget it... 50+% are slow, stupid and arrogant, the worst three combinations for driving IMHO.

We have had red light camaras, speeding camaras (the camaras dont speed, they catch the fools that do), and camaras for just about every felony you can think of. Most people just pay the fine like any other bill. However we did have a case here a couple of years ago where a camera booked a speeding light pole 65 times in one afternoon!!!!!

Hmmm. I like that idea. Never heard of this one. Where can a guy purchase one of these, and how much, Mark?

I am into all things "identity-protecting". Mark's post reminded me of a cheap, fail-safe way to keep you car's ignition key out of the hands of would-be mutants. Place or tape a piece of paper over the VIN number on your dash, on the inside of your windshield.
A thief can get a "replacement" key to YOUR car with the number.

In response to the notion that red light cameras (and by extension speed cameras) are unconstitutional and a violation of privacy, Virginia State Sen. Frank W. Wagner (Republican) was on target when he said, “I have a hard time seeing the difference between (red light cameras) and a camera in a 7-Eleven catching a robber. You’re using technology to catch lawbreakers.”

Check your local state laws pertaining to those license plate covers that either distort a photo image, or absorbs radar!

Here in New York, it is illegal to put anything over your license plate, no matter what, even if it just clear plastic!

It is also illegal for a license plate frame to cover more than 3% of the plate! If you can't read every word on the license plate easily and clearly, its illegal!

Sure do see alot of vehicles that use them, but I also know alot of friends who have gotten tickets for all of the above mentioned reasons.

The quote makes great headlines for the senator... but we are talking apples and oranges.

Well, KaGee, I respectfully disagree. We're talking filming law breakers. I consider myself more at risk from someone sailing thru a red light - something I see at least once a day - than from a hold up at a 7/11 or a bank. Curiously, 'bout the only folks who complain about those security cameras are the robbers/thieves and/or their lawyers. Hmmmm.

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

That's interesting. So if I enter the intersection when it is green or yellow, wait for the light to turn red (and traffic to stop), then complete my left turn, it is okay? That just seems wrong. Especially since the traffic that gets the green light next has to wait until you clear the intersection. This is difficult to explain without a diagram or something.

Originally posted by AK Chappy:
If you enter the intersection while the light is green or yellow, you are ok. Therefore, when you have only a green circle, not an arrow, you pull forward into the intersection. When the light changes you have the right-of-way because you entered on green.
Yes JamesCoste it is very legal. It is no different than going straight on green or yellow, if you enter while it is not red you have the right-of-way.
I am looking up the AK driver's manual. I will see if there is anything in there about it.

AK Chappy

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

It has this first. Notice it says, do not proceed past the CENTER of the intersection.
This is under "LEFT TURN" in the book

1. Watch traffic light cycle.
2. Wait for oncoming vehicles in
the intersection. Don’t proceed
past the center of intersection.
3. Keep front wheels straight while
waiting.
4. Look out of left window for
pedestrians and check turn
path.

Under "INTERSECTIONS"
Yield to all traffic that is so close
as to be a hazard, and to vehicle
already in intersection.

Under "GREEN BALL" and "GREEN ARROW"
However, observe
caution and yield to those who are still in or enter the
intersection with the right-of-way.

So yes, it is in the AK driver's manual and is taught that way up here too. I was taught that way back in OH, 20 years ago.

AK Chappy

Thanks for reading and sharing the rule on that one.

I'll have to stop thinking bad thoughts at those who end up in the middle of the intersection making me wait for them to move out of the way so I can go when my light is already green.

James,
Glad to see you didn't take offense.

It is the true red light runners (light turns red and they are still 20 feet from the line doing about 50 and don't slow down) and the one's who go 66 in a 65 in the fast lane and won't move over that chap my hide. :)

AK Chappy

AK,
It may simply be a matter of semantice but, at least in most states, you never HAVE the right-of-way. You may "assume" the right-of-way, but you never own it. Also where I live, the locals will ticket you for increasing speed when controlled by a "yellow", which is actually a hazzard light.

A hazzard light carries a certain burden of liability that a green does not.

This would make a turn on yellow near impossible. YMMV, when you leave home town.

Re: Traffic Ticket By Camera

Point well taken BB. You are correct in the Have and assume words.

I agree about speeding up for yellow lights. I did not intend to say that one should speed up to get into the intersection while it was yellow. However, if you are 2 feet from the line and the light turns yellow, while you are still moving, you have entered the light under yellow. That would be how I meant that part.

There, clear as mud now huh?
:D

AK Chappy
