Yes motion. They have a few different setting for pictures. You can also set them to record video , but eats batteries.

For motion they use infrared..
It is woodsy, but I get enough light to keep the battery charged. I have some property in Northern MN that I'm going to use a cam and the large solar panel. Deer, and wolves, cross a field. I'll put my setup on the Northside so the panel will get full sun. It should work pretty good.
I use just the starter plan that allows 250 pix/mth. I'm 3 weeks in and only have 25 pix left. But, it's only $5/mth. Not ready to "spend the coin" to go unlimited. I too really enjoy seeing what's out there...

on trail cams do you have to charge them and go download or are they wireless or?

Mine has solar panel but the battery alone last a week , and it bluetooth to my phone ( range aint great ....probly 40m line of sight )

This is the one I got mostly I have it "live view" to my phone so I can see if the postie is at the mail box .
Comes with some mounting hardware, charges off usb too , and ya gotta download the app off google play ...or store ...cant remember
