trailer brace needs added

While moving my boat forward so it sits on the trailer more the way it should I have discovered that the swivel style bolster bracket that previously would have been around 6" or more from the end of the bunk would now be located almost to the end of the bunk board itself. Approximately 1.5-2 1/2 max. from the end. I don't know what is the minimum suggested distance from end of bb to attach a swivel bolster bracket. Especially on the transom end of the boat with a motor on it. Right now the transom is approximately 2" past the end cross brace where rear swivel bolsters would be mounted.

So I either take the one end of bunk board and extend it more past the end of the transom so I can mount the swivel part of the bolster bracket further from the end of the bunk or I add another brace forward of the end of the trailer cross brace and mount the swivel bolsters further from the end of the bunk board that way. However doing so would place it closer to the forward cross brace where the other set of swivel bolster brackets would be mounted.

The latter option more time consuming, costly and difficult but I do not know how many feet of the bunk board at a minimum needs to support the bottom of the boat near the strakes. he boat itself is an aluminum V-hull that weighs under 200lbs according to online specs and measures approximately 13.5' in overall length

Any suggestions or insight on this concern would be appreciated as the new bolster brackets should arrive today. As well can anyone suggest if I need to cut out the carpet around the spot the swivel boltster will be attached and I assume the longest lag bolt of the appropriate diameter is used to fasten the swivel to the side of in this case 2 x 4 boards.

Ayuh,.... That's Fine at a couple inches,....

No need to cut the carpet either,...
I prefer through bolts, with nuts, 'n washers myself,...

I am not sure how I can do that with swivel brackets on the top of the bolster as in this case the wide side of the 2x4 that the swivel bracket would bolt to will be against the boat hull on the other side so unless the nut and or washer on the hull side were countersunk it would be up against the boat hull. So unless I'm missing something here on what is typical I would think some sort of lag type bolt with lock washer and or flat washer would need used.

Still you're saying it is okay to bolt the swivel bracket that is fastened to the top of the bolster bracket at a point that is within 2-3" of the end of the 2 x4 is that correct? Do you know what minimum length of bunk board should be used to support the boat mentioned to be about 13.5' long should be. There will be at least a 6' bunk or longer if need be when these are replaced. Though I'm guessing the length should be at least half the length but do not know that to be fact.

6' is plenty... stern on bunks and bow on keel rollers works great

BTW you don't need to keep starting new threads while working on one trailer.... these should all be in the same thread

Okay, thanks for the info. When finished there will also be two keel rollers on stern and two on the bow. As well of course the two 6' bunks on the stern running from slightly past the keel towards the bow.

I didn't realize of course that a topic on a trailer could be continued even if the focus had somewhat changed. Will go by that until this project is completed and in future posts.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on what is typical to use to fasten the swivel part of the bolster bracket to the wide side of the bunk board? I assumed a lag type bolt is used since the opposite side of the board the bolt goes through will rest against the hull.

Re: trailer brace needs added

either a lag from the bottom which is what I have did or the better solution is to use bolts and nuts with the head of the bolt countersunk on the top side

carriage bolts are common as they have thinner heads but the can be problematic to remove next time

Excellent idea putting the head vs. nut etc on top side so counter-sink wouldn't have to be as deep.

Switching back to the rivets for a minute, can you or anyone else suggest what to use to carefully grind the head off of rivet being replaced so as to minimize risk of damage to hull metal. I don't have a grinder of any kind but could get some attachment for a drill if that would work and I knew the right type of grinding wheel attachment to get. Such as the shape and or coarse of fine etc. I would guess smaller would be better, not sure though.

Maybe a preformed round or cylinder shaped "grinding" type of attachment. Just pulling at straws here. I need to get one out so I can figure out what diameter and reach to order for replacement rivets.

Sorry about any confusion posting in the wrong place. I realized almost right after I posted that comment on rivets that is was in the wrong place and copied it to the rivets posting. However I did not immediately see a place to delete the post to prevent confusion and then placed the question on rivets in the proper area.
