I am the wife of 204 Escape. We have an easy loader trailer for our Larson 204 escape. Brought it home tonight and when we got ready to back it up at home the brakes locked up and wouldn't move. What would cause this to happen??? Any ideas are welcome...

Not enough information. What kind of breaks do you have? When was the last time you used the trailer? Did you check the break fluid? Do you do a regular maintenance on the trailer? Is it used in salt water?
This should get us going.

You apparently have a surge brake system that does not have "free backing" brakes. This means you need to look at the coupler for a lockout device that locks out the brakes when backing up. Surge brakes operate on the principle that when the tow vehicle is braking, the force of the trailer against the tow vehicle actuates a master cylinder just as you do when you step on the brakes. The more forceful the stop is, the harder the trailer brakes apply. Therefore, backing up has the same action and the brakes apply. Going downhil would not pose much of a problem but backing uphill into a driveway causes the brakes to actuate.

There is another way to do lock out the brakes automatically. Installing a lockout solenoid in the hydraulic system allows the solenoid to activate when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse. This releases hydraulic pressure so you can back up. This requires another wire in the electrical harness between the trailer and tow vehicle. It gets connected to the back up light circuit.

I had an occasion had to pull a surge break trailer with one of our trucks that at that time only had the four pin flat connector. Backed it up into the parking spot by turning on the parking lights and plugging the end pin into the truck plug sideways.

Yes, it's hydraulic surge brakes. I thought if I pulled forward a few feet and then went in reverse again it would let go , but it locked up once again. Got it where I needed it and unhooked it and walked away for tonight :)

If you happen to have drum brakes and your grease seal has let loose a lot of grease because of over zealous greasing of the bearing buddy, free backing brakes will no longer be free backing.

If you have disk brakes, you need a brake lockout solenoid.

No that won't do it. It either has an electric reverse lockout or a "manual" lockout (a pin that you insert to block the coupler from sliding back)

Yes, we do have a pin to insert. Haven't ever had to use it before, will try it again tomorrow to see if that works. Thanks everyone for your help :)
