it has come to my attention I may be required to
have trailer brakes. is there a way to install
brakes on an old '72 shorelander s/a, or should
I start shopping for a newer trailer?
thanks in advance,
M.Y.

mellowyellow,

Take a look at your axle. If it has square backing plates with four holes, you can bolt them right up.

If not, you can have them added or replace the axle with one ready to accept brakes.

Yup. That's what I plan to do. :)

I am almost sure to get the brake kit from www.championtrailers.com.

Once you have the correct axle with backing plates the whole kit (discs) is around 6 bills. One can install electrics for less, but I think I want surge brakes.

Yo - I would check to be absolutely sure that brakes are required in your state. If you tow vehicle is any larger than a VW you should not need brakes. I pulled a number of boats up to 19' over 20 years and did not feel the need. I have had a couple over 19' that I would not pull down the street without brakes whether they were required or not.
