trailer brakes

I have a tandem axle Freedom Wheels boat trailer, with surge brakes. My question is there is a steel cable that is slotted and attached to the master cylinder and I am not sure where the other end of this steel cable should be attached.

While pulling the boat the trailer brakes locked up and I had to disconnect the brake line so I could continue to pull the trailer. I am going to order a new master cylinder and when I reassemble the master cylinder I would like to know if that cable is necessary.

I assume that the cable is a safety device of some sort but I am not sure how it operates or if it is necessary.

If anyone knows what this cable is for and what or where the other end of it attaches to, I would appreciate your help.

Re: trailer brakes

Welcome to iboats!

It sounds like you are describing the break-away cable. It activates the brakes if the trailer becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle. You connect it to the tow vehicle hitch or frame (but NOT the ball mount).
