All right, I know someone out there has encountered this deal, so waiting for some help. Smart tabs just arrived. Go look at boat and 8" wide trailer bunks extend a foot past transom, right where suggested location of smart tabs should go. I have the boat as far forward on the trailer as I can comfortably go. I would like to trim the bunks. Now, ramp is a few miles away. I could launch my 18' Renken (wt. with motor 1600#) take a cordless sawzall and lop off ends of bunks. Or I have a jack that could raise the aft end of boat off the bunks and cut them at home. Or I watch and see what ideas ya'll have. ;)

Re: Trailer bunks and smart tabs

Why are the bunks a foot past the transom? If its to get the proper tongue weight there are a couple of other options. Move the boat back so the transom is directly over the end of the bunk. That action will remove some tongue weight. To get that tongue weight back again, move the axle to the rear. Most newer trailers have the axle and springs mounted on a sub frame that can be repositioned for trailer balance. If that's not the case with yours, cut the bunks off. You would only need to raise the boat an inch or so to get the saw in there.
