I found a nice looking boat and trailer in our local classified ads that i was interested on buying this coming weekend . The boat has a license number on the bow but the trailer is not registered and doesn't appear to have a license plate. Does the trailer have to be inspected before i can get it registered and get a plate issued from mov ? i'm in Canada.

What does the previous owner say? have you contacted your version of the DMV?

Check with your local registrar. In Ohio for example all you need is a weight slip. The trailers do not have titles here.

Tried for several days to contact our local DMV with no success, recording put me on hold for over an hour. That's why im asking here. Owner says i could call it a homebuilt to avoid the red tape, but im not so sure. Trailer looks old, rust on it and bunks need work

Why not let us know where you are?
Someone might be able to help you then.
Have you checked out the "local dmv" website?
How about a local insurance agent if your DMV uses those?

I know in Manitoba it used to be easy to register a trailer as home built but not anymore.

If you have the registration & a sales slip from the po why can't you just register it in your name & get new plates? Don't see how they can make you get it inspected before it's registered if it has no plates, but who knows. You'll have to wade thru the beaucracy. Go to local DMV office & ask. Forget calling them.

Many states require inspection before registration, just like my trailer bought on a Bill of Sale.

I don't know what happens north of the border.

Is the DMV open? If so, stop calling and go there. Talk to a person face to face and get the information you need to complete the process. Take notes on what you specifically need to avoid multiple trips.

**My wife works for the DMV in my state and the number of times I get told "He/she called some random number, was given random advice, and was po'd that the info they were given was wrong..." Save yourself the grief and aggravation.

Have to make an appointment to get to talk to someone at our local MVR, good luck with that, took me 4 months to get my truck registered last summer.

The trailer is not registered in the owners name, and have to make an appointment to see someone at MVR. months in advance.

How do you plan on showing that the trailer is now yours without proper paperwork? Good luck with that. Not being a wise guy, just sayin.

Exactly, that's what i'm saying, if the seller doesnt have the trailer registered in his name then i cannot buy it. But hes telling me that a can call it a homebuilt to get it registered and plated.

Does it even have a Vin stamped on it? If it doesn't or its missing then you can't register it normally anyway. If it does have a Vin you can send them it and get a full report of whose name it's in/ if it's been reported stolen/ and debt owed on it ect... I'm guessing it doesn't since the trailers I've owned all had the Vin on a stupid sticker that fades off it. Not even stamped anywhere. At that point your registering it home built anyway. Super simple. Just go to the office and tell them your registering a home built boat trailer. Need number of axles, over all length, color and I think they ask for an approximate weight you will be towing. Simple as that. I'm in ontario and have registered many trailers from campers to flat beds that way. No need for any kind of inspection either. I know it sounds too good to be true. But at least in my area it totally is. Make sure you scrape off any brand names on it tho. I had an interesting conversation with a water cop holding a home built registration while looking at my boat that had Thundercraft decals down the side of it. Just had to tell him anything with 70% core replaced can legaly be a home built and he went along with it fine. Not that that was lie anyway, it was totally new core and that's legal here.

Canada, while at least ontario is a different breed. No inspections of any kind on trailers. Except for yellow ticket commercial. Don't need any kind of proof you built it to register it home built. Hell when I first went in the office to ask how to register a trailer I bought years ago the lady just said she was going to forget what I said. Then she asked me the general specs of it and told me it's great I'm home building such a thing. I caught on quick. The only ones that are tricky are snowmobile trailers. Like 30 percent of the ones out there have been stolen at one point or another and they know it. So their reall picky all of a sudden when you say snowmobile trailer.

" hes telling me that a can call it a homebuilt to get it registered and plated." If this is true then why didn't he do it?

That's a good point. You absolutely can do exactly that in ontario no problem. Maybe just lazy and he towed with a random plate he had? Maybe just stolen and he was too scared to go try himself. Only way to find out is to find a Vin on it and run its abstract.
