About the only time one would experience tire hop is when towing a trailer with no boat attached. Even then it will only occur on an extremely bumpy road or at a speed where surface imperfections are very uniform in spacing. The cure then is to alter your speed. Sort of like altering your speed in a boat to adjust for wave period.

It's the constant increase/decrease in air pressure that heats up the air inside the tired eventually causing it to fail. Fill is to pressure indicated on the tire...

That's actually not the case. When underinflated, there is too much flex in the sidewall, all the internal layers of the tire start rubbing together and eventually get so hot that they seperate and the tire fails. Low pressure cause a failure do to heat damage.

Well, like I said before, I have been running my tires way low on the pressure. I'm getting ready to go on another trip, 3 hours each way all highway. If I bring the pressure up to where they should be, will I be ok? Or have I already damaged the tires?

Any way to tell? Of is the safe thing to do to just replace them?

If the tires were hot as you said after your previous trip, they may have been weakened in the sidewall but there's no way I know of to be 100% sure. If you want to go to the trouble to break them down,if there is a large quantity of black dust(tire materiel) inside the tire they are definately toast.
